Adorable little town with a great medieval wall surrounding the perimeter. It’s actually the city in the end scene of “Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory” when they fly out of the roof of the factory. It had all the conveniences of a much larger city with the quaint old town feeling without being overrun with tourists or students. I would go back to hang out on a road trip layover stop again.
We liked Nördlingen better than Dinkelsbühl because so much of the middle of town is reserved for pedestrians. The Meteor Museum is fantastic and well worth a visit. Also for anyone travelling the Romantic Road this is a good location to venture out to other towns along the way.
We have visited Nordlingen twice as an overnight stop on our way to Austria or Italy. It is a lovely historic town with extremely well kept buildings from the 15th and 16th century. It is walled and gated town with a central market which has been running on both occasions. The stalls have a great selection of produce. There are good cafes and restaurants and everywhere is just so full of character. Our first stay was inside the wall and it was fabulous. We made a bad choice on our return as I had booked in a hurry and only on arrival did we realise we were 5km away and had to drive to get into the town. There is plenty of parking outside the wall and as the town is small, that is not a problem. There are plenty of disabled parking spots within the walls but other cars are on limited time. A festival had taken place and we found all the trees wrapped in knitted and crocheted designs. We came across it by chance on the first occasion but have every intention of making Nordlingen a regular stop as we pass through Germany. Unfortunately it was pouring with rain when I took the photos this morning.
The mideaval town of Noerdlingen is a must for travelers with a taste for history. One can walk on the ancient city walls round 360 degrees for a good hour. Walking distance from the Hotel to the inner town is about 10 minutes at a slow pace. There is also a Bavarian railway museum near by with old steam locomotives on display. (7 Euros entrance fee) If you are a fan though, I would recommend the one in Nuremberg as there are 3 levels of historical railway depictions for less entrance fee plus the first English locomotive 'Adler' (Original) run in Germany for some 70 km in 1835 and very first train inaugurated in Germany / Bavaria at a speed of 35 km/h where people said that kind of speed would be fatal.....
Nordlingen is a lovely walled town along the Romantic Road in Germany. It is situated close to the middle of the drive that is called the Romantic Road. The town has beautiful historic buildings and painted facades with signed walks around the main areas and the fortified walls in the old town.
This town was full of interesting , accessible things to do. Make sure to get their tourist card - it was $25 for our family of 3, and you can go and go and go for 3 days. And we did! Everyone was nice, great food and an amazing city center. The church was absolutely stunning. I wish we could know another bit about the history....
