Santo Domingo has very nice sightseeing places, the colonial zone, the Malecon, the 3 eyes.
Traffic is crazy, if you plan on driving, be ready for a wild ride, you have to break a few rules or you won't move.
In general, I felt safe, but I tried to stay in tourist places.
Beaches around the colonial zone and the Malecon are full of garbage.

I really enjoyed my stay in Santo Domingo!
I really enjoyed my stay in Santo Domingo! I am really interested in history and Santo Domingo is all about history! The first castle, fort, church, monastery in the New World! The first permanent settlement and first planned street in the New World. History is everywhere you go in the Colonial Zone. Excellent museums. A special call out for the underwater archaeological museum. The food, bars, and nightlife were all so much fun.

It's always great to travel here. This trip I seen alot more police activity over the whole city. It looks like they are cracking down on crime, which is always good. I actually got stopped twice in a road block. After asking a few questions I was on my way.

As every country's capital, Santo Domingo buzzes with life.
As every country's capital, Santo Domingo buzzes with life. You gotta know where you're going, you gotta be comfortable with long traffic times, constant construction sites and a lot of people around. There are really good restaurants and nightlife is pretty good. Colonial Zone is the historic site to go if you want to see the architecture, go to several museums at walking distance and learn about some of our history.

Take a guided tour through the colonial attractions, you will enjoy the history of the place much more. The fortress did have a nice interactive tour, also the Museo de las Casas Reales had a lot of information posted.
The food and shops in the Zona Colonial were more expensive than we really expected. But the Tourism Police have a constant presence and the whole area felt very safe. The staff at the hotel warned us about straying from the area though, so it is important to know where you are and what you plan on doing.
The Duarte wax museum was a pleasant surprise, and you should get to know the history of the Dominican Republic as it is fascinating. Even though they received independence from Spain in 1821, it wasn't really until 1965 that a truly independent democracy was established.

walking through ciudad colonial is a must..choosing where to eat is really hard..food quality is very low..i have tried a lot of different restaurants but was never 100% happy with the food...i wish the Indian restaurant had been open as i am sure it would have been delicious..the weather is too hot and humid to walk very far so it is a matter of continuously taking uber taxis.even so, i can never do all the things i want and its the 4th time i go there
This place is superb! The staff are lovely people and the facilities are just great. It's like staying at a vintage house, I absolutely loved it! And the breakfast is the best one I had in my two weeks travelling in The Dominican Republic. Plus, it is close to the best restaurants and spots to see in the Zona Colonial.
The modern hotel is located in the center of the Zona Colonial. Breakfasts in the hotel restaurant were delicious. The room was comfortable, perfectly clean and cleaned daily with a very comfortable double bed. The bathroom was clean and well equipped. There was a safe in the room. There is an elevator in the hotel.
The new rooms are clean and reasonable in size. Try to get the new ones. The staff was very friendly and helpful. There is a big supermarket 2 mins away. Location was just alright, a few restaurants in walking distance, the hotel is located in one of the safe areas of Santo Domingo.
I had to stay longer in Santo Domingo and the choice was of course to stay in Catalonia, best hotel in the zone, it has amazing food in the breakfast and at it’s restaurant, it is spacious and have great views on the sea from everywhere! Love this place
