Featuring a bar and a shared lounge, Balcones del Río Hotel is located in Latacunga. We had a great night’s stay at Balcones Del Rio before starting the Quilotoa Loop hike. We got great advice about the trek from the owner and were able to store our bags securely with them. The whole hotel was sparkling clean and our room was comfortable and nicely appointed, with a private bathroom. The highlight for us was a generous breakfast with fresh berry smoothies, tea/coffee, croissants with jam, ham and cheese rolls and two eggs each. What fuel for a hike! And on top of everything, the owners drove us to the bus terminal after breakfast for the start of the loop. We will definitely return.

Stay here is short as possible for Cotopaxi and quilatoa, then go somewhere interesting like Banos or Quito. In hindsight, and from talking to other travellers, Secret garden in Cotopaxi would be a better choice than latacunga.
Very few places open to eat on Sundays although a good vegan and fast food place in a road 2 blocks away from the main square. We wish we had stayed out at Quilotoa where the traveller infrastructure was better.
I was pleasantly surprised by Latacunga. The historic centre is very beautiful with several pretty plazas and graceful streets. It’s laid back without the smoke-belching buses of Quito and Cuenca. Latacunga really should be visited more.
Our goal was to see Quilatoa and we did in one day easily. Took the bus out $2.00 and back $2.50 from the entrance of the park. To get bus back you have to walk out to the main road. You'll see bus sitting there. Also good restaurants and hostels right at the rim. We walked down and rode mules out. It's quite steep and we could have done it but too lazy. Had been doing allot of hiking! It was very cool to be inside a Crater and have such a beautiful lake to enjoy! Highly recommend this adventure. And very low cost. Buses run every 30 minutes and it's a 2 hour trip each way. Gorgeous!
A good place to stay to see Laguna Quitoloa and Volcan Cotopaxi We found direct bus, Vivero, to Laguna Quitoloa and return, at the local bus station . We stayed at the Hotel Rodelu and ate at the restaurant in the hotel. Taxis were easy and good value to get to hotel from the bus station, and return.
Latacunga itself is not really special. But you can make nice day trips to quilotoa lake (take the bus from the bus terminal for $2) or cotopaxi national park (bus to cruce parque nacional cotopaxi for $0,75 and then hire a pick up for about $10 per Person). Take care when you walk around latacunga, there are thiefs and tourists almost always get overcharged.
