Please to not do the Laguna hikes by yourself. I did the laguna cuicocha hike on a saturday solo but had been seeing other groups and I was taken into the rocks off the trail by a man with a gun and knife. He robbed me and took advantage of me. It was the scariest moment of my life. Please please please do not to this hike alone and only go with a group. I only was able to visit the Mercado 24 de Mayo which was wonderful for local food before I left the town because I couldn't be there anymore.
The Otavalo market is a shadow of its former self. The market is flooded with cheap goods from China - microfiber children's clothing, trinkets, etc. It's hard to find the local products, and there are few left. Should be removed from tourist routes!
Saturday market was extensive and filled with great artesanias at very good prices. By far the best selection of anywhere in Ecuador, including Quito and Cuenca. Good dinners at Mi Otavalito , Balcon de Imbabura (chicken soup!) and Cafe Pachamama. We didn't have time to visit waterfalls, lake or bird rehab place.
Otavalo was one of my favorite places in Ecuador. It is small, most of locals are indians, very beautiful people. Town is lovely and all clean(if you were in Latin America, you know, it is not really common). Nature is nice, with mountains and big waterfall near. Also, it is quite touristic, so you can find supermarkets with nice choice of goods there.
Parqur Condos was a huge highlight and much nicer than expected. Beautiful views, amazing birds and very family friendly. There are so many interesting natural wonders in the area, I would recommend staying long enough to be able to explore the surrounding area a bit. The dry air and altitude are a bit hard to take, especially if you're coming from the coast. I recommend a quick trip to the Peguche waterfall to breathe in some humid air, but bring but spray!
Nice little town. Nice treck nearby like mount Fuya Fuya (guided by Jorge from Ecomontes Tours), the cemetery (don't miss the Thursday gattering), Parke del Condors (bald eagle fly) and El Lechero.
Otavalo
This hotel exceeded my expectations! It was so authentic with great architecture and atmosphere. Marcus (the owner) and Isolina were super-friendly. The room was so clean, my wife and I loved the beds, patio, fireplace, and views. The breakfast/dinner area is so authentic too, you feel it's like a museum. The dinner and breakfast were delicious. Also, Cascada de Peguche (waterfall) is only 10 mins away. Thank you Marcus and Isolina for the great experience! I highly recommend this place if you are heading to Otavalo.
Otavalo
Price / Quality is the best we experienced last 3 month in Ecuador! Hostal is ran by very helpful and friendly indigenous Quechua family. Room was very clean. Located quietly with a beautiful view on Otavalo. Walking down is easy and if you don't want to walk up , a taxi costs $2. Walk down to Plaza de Ponchos is approx. 5-10 min. Price even includes a breakfast (fresh juice, warm croissant, scrambled egg, butter, marmalade). We definitely come back!
Otavalo
Beautiful place, lots of animals around included one pregnant Lama. If you want to help a bit, you could buy some dogfood in the shop, sometimes a little help can change a lot :) Ivan is a great manager, he knows a lot about the area, ask him about hikes around. It's 10 minutes only by bus to Otavalo. The kitchen was well equiped, even sometimes it was a bit crowdy but it was fun to use it with lot other guests.
Otavalo
Verónica was the kindest, most welcoming host I've probably ever had. She was so caring and wanted to make sure I had everything I needed. I felt so welcomed and taken care of. The breakfast was delicious, the bed was very comfortable, and the property is an easy bus ride to/from Otavalo. I only stayed 1 night but happily could have stayed longer!
