Please to not do the Laguna hikes by yourself. I did the laguna cuicocha hike on a saturday solo but had been seeing other groups and I was taken into the rocks off the trail by a man with a gun and knife. He robbed me and took advantage of me. It was the scariest moment of my life. Please please please do not to this hike alone and only go with a group. I only was able to visit the Mercado 24 de Mayo which was wonderful for local food before I left the town because I couldn't be there anymore.
The Otavalo market is a shadow of its former self. The market is flooded with cheap goods from China - microfiber children's clothing, trinkets, etc. It's hard to find the local products, and there are few left. Should be removed from tourist routes!
Saturday market was extensive and filled with great artesanias at very good prices. By far the best selection of anywhere in Ecuador, including Quito and Cuenca. Good dinners at Mi Otavalito , Balcon de Imbabura (chicken soup!) and Cafe Pachamama. We didn't have time to visit waterfalls, lake or bird rehab place.
Otavalo was one of my favorite places in Ecuador. It is small, most of locals are indians, very beautiful people. Town is lovely and all clean(if you were in Latin America, you know, it is not really common). Nature is nice, with mountains and big waterfall near. Also, it is quite touristic, so you can find supermarkets with nice choice of goods there.
Parqur Condos was a huge highlight and much nicer than expected. Beautiful views, amazing birds and very family friendly. There are so many interesting natural wonders in the area, I would recommend staying long enough to be able to explore the surrounding area a bit. The dry air and altitude are a bit hard to take, especially if you're coming from the coast. I recommend a quick trip to the Peguche waterfall to breathe in some humid air, but bring but spray!
Nice little town. Nice treck nearby like mount Fuya Fuya (guided by Jorge from Ecomontes Tours), the cemetery (don't miss the Thursday gattering), Parke del Condors (bald eagle fly) and El Lechero.
Otavalo
This hotel exceeded my expectations! It was so authentic with great architecture and atmosphere. Marcus (the owner) and Isolina were super-friendly. The room was so clean, my wife and I loved the beds, patio, fireplace, and views. The breakfast/dinner area is so authentic too, you feel it's like a museum. The dinner and breakfast were delicious. Also, Cascada de Peguche (waterfall) is only 10 mins away. Thank you Marcus and Isolina for the great experience! I highly recommend this place if you are heading to Otavalo.
Good breakfast of fresh bread butter jam eggs cooked to order fresh coffee glass of pure fruit juice and a plate of sliced fruit. Enjoyed having breakfast brought to our table, not a buffet. Staff was very helpful with scheduling taxis and scheduling breakfast. Plenty of hot water for showers and comfortable beds. Our room had a balcony overlooking the street, yet not disturbed by traffic noise inside the room. Not fancy, but an excellent choice in Otavalo.
Otavalo
Location of the accommodation is in the city center. Room was nice, collorfull, with comfortable bed. Hot water and well working available. Very nice and supportive staff. Kitchen with good equipment and with dinning area. Just a walking distance from the plaza de ponchos, where the famous Otavalo markets takes place. You can park your car in the parking place around the corner (5$a day), or 1$per hour. Hotel donates you 2$:)
My primary reason for visiting Otavalo was the Saturday morning Poncho Market and Dona Esther is located at a short distance from there. The Dutch couple who own the place are helpful and friendly, as are the staff, although few speak English. Wendy, the owner, had a small electric heater put in my room, which I really appreciated.

Great family cabin with 2 rooms, living room, chimney, kitchen and BBQ area. Although it doesn't have a lake view, it's still very cozy (and cheaper than renting two cabins). Staff is very friendly and food (typical Ecuadorian) is great.
