The hotel is a one star hotel (and those leaving poor reviews should perhaps remember this!). And yet we had a spacious room, comfortable bed, private bathroom with nice hot water and excellent WiFi. Luis, who welcomed us was fantastic. We are cyclists and had flagged we'd need somewhere to store our bikes. We arrived, dripping wet after a tough day. Luis immediately made us cups of coffee. He explained we'd been allocated a large room to give space for our bikes and then offered to help carry them to the first floor. In the morning, he made us an excellent breakfast with all the coffee we wanted. Honestly, we've seen campsites that charge not much less (50 euros) and all you get is a square of dirt for your tent and communal showers. The day before we were at a hotel where breakfast would have cost us 20 Euros. Hotel Valle de Ayala could use a coat of paint, yes but the truly important things it gets right and at a very reasonable price. We'd stay there again without hesitation.

Great location, easy access on arrival

Booked the apartment to attend the Europa League Final 2025 as it was extremely reasonably priced compared to any of the apartments/hotels etc in Bilbao itself. The location is only about 20 mins from the city and is easy to get to despite it seeming to be remote. On arrival we were met by the hosts, M&M and Lemmy the dog. We were shown around the apartment who ensured we knew about the facilities and how everything worked etc. including the excellent pellet-powered stove. A welcome and lovely surprise was the amount of food and drink items provided by the hosts – breakfast cereal, bread rolls, milk, butter, fruit and much more. Extremely generous and very handy. The nearest supermarket is only 10 mins drive so it's easy to add to these if needed. The apartment itself is attached to the main house but is completely private with a great terrace to sit out on and surrounded by countryside – trees, grass, cats and tranquility. The bedrooms are comfortable, the bathroom is excellent and there is a kitchen/dining area large enough for the stay as well as a sitting area with sofa, chairs, TV and the stove. It was surprisingly chilly at night in May when we visited so we used the stove which was easy to light (electronic control) and provided very good warmth. The apartment was extremely clean and clearly well cared for with lots of personal touches around that made it feel very welcoming. As we were staying for the Europa League Final, our hosts helped us work out the best route to the city and stadium – we ended up using the nearest Metro station which was only 20 mins away; there is a train station closer as well so it's very easy to get into Bilbao itself. The Metro is very cheap to use (recommend getting a Barik card for many journeys) and is probably the best way to get around without any parking or traffic hassle. The location is fantastic with the tranquility a real bonus and the hosts are superb.
