We arrived at our booked room at 2330 and it was a nightmare in a seedy alley and we were terrified to stay there. So I hopped on Booking.com and found this place, still available with check in at that time of night and OMG!!!! Jean contacted us to confirm that we wanted to check in at that time of night. We felt SO SAFE and well taken care of by Jean and his wonderful friends whose evening we had interrupted. He even granted us a late check out because he could tell how stressed we were. I cannot recommend this place more. Clean, the other guest we met was really nice. Just.. I really can't say enough about how wonderful it was. Highly recommend.

A Tribute to Norman History

Surrounded by the countryside of Normandy, Caen is a proud city which pays poignant tribute to its past. It suffered greatly during World War II and although most of the structures have been carefully restored, one monument remaining partly in ruins is Saint-Étienne-le-Vieux church.

The church is across from a floral park overlooked by the stately 11th-century Abbaye aux Hommes, built by William the Conqueror, who is also buried there. His wife is buried in the equally grand Abbaye aux Dames by an even larger park to the east. Between the 2 lies another of William’s creations, the remarkably intact 11th-century Norman castle which now houses museums of Normandy history and fine art.

Another unmissable museum is the Memorial for Peace, a sensitive portrayal of the horrors of war, with particular emphasis on the D-Day landings on beaches north of the city. One road leading there passes Pegasus Bridge and the large Caen-Ouistreham passenger ferry port. The city is also served by Carpiquet Airport and a train station.

The surrounding streets are lined with shops and restaurants, and there are a few half-timbered buildings dotted around. The bars on Rue Ecuyére offer some of the best nightlife and are popular with the large student population.

My husband and I love exploring Caen.

My husband and I love exploring Caen. We have visited Caen a few times now and there's still more too see and explore. As we dont drive we use the public transport to get around. Their transport system is spot on, we have never had any issues - their timings are spot on. The travel tickets are easy to use once you know about them. They worked well for us and are cost effective as you have use 1 ticket for a single journey or a ticket that last from 24 hours to 72 hours and you can you them on all transports. The same travel card can be reused by topping up at the tram machines. The area of Caen where we stayed was located near to the centre of Caen so it was in walking distance to the town. Caen is a beautiful and clean historic city. Well worth a visit.

Ideal jump off point to tour the Nomandy D Day landings, Mont St Michel and Chartres Cahedral. Would have visited Bayeux however the tapestrie was in England. Highly impressed with the castle, St Pierre Eglise and the Mens Abbey. Caen Memorial Museum is defitely the best to cover the D Day Landings and covered the full spectrum of events leading up to and following the war. Great cafeteria, souvenir shop and the facility and grounds well maintained. Ample parking and free. Possible the best meseum I have ever been in.

If you like history, fine arts , great food and wine, then , yeas Caen is place to see. Besides, it's well connected by very affordable public transport with Leon Sur Mer, Ouistreham, Bayeux and Honfleur among many other spots of interest in Normandy.

Caen Memorial visit was memorable, moving and informative.

Caen Memorial visit was memorable, moving and informative. As we were travelling from Caen to Cherbourg, via the D-Day beaches and Arromanche, the Trio Ticket was a perfect fit and great value. Pizzeria Foglia was superb with a great team, good service and fabulous food.

Great castle, lovely place, tour train was very good and worth the money. Nice shops. Overall much better than expected. Caen memorial museum is a must see and allow at least a whole day. Good location for other D Day sites.

We loved Caen.

We loved Caen. It is such a young and vibrant city with a lively and friendly atmosphere and a good mixture of people, from students to tourists and locals. A lot of nice restaurants and bars, individual shops and boutiques and a beautiful historical city center. When you can arrange to stay over a Friday, you will enjoy the large, local market right outside La Demeure Saint Saveur and around the main square. Such a great vibe!

The location was great, a five minute walk to the Caen war memorial & 15 minute drive to Pegasus Bridge. The room was clean & the bed was comfortable ish, If you like a softer bed. The air-conditioning was very effective, so the room stayed at a comfortable temperature for sleep. The restaurant had a small menu but the food we had was great. Breakfast was also pretty good when compared to other hotels in this bracket.

The hotel was good for the price. The room was fine, and it was clean. The location was great for visiting the centre of Caen. All the staff were really helpful The breakfast was good. The restaurant was absolutely superb. The decor is a little odd, but the food was fantastic. We had the mid option for fixed menu and it exceeded expectations! Special mention to our waiter Artur - wonderful!

It's a very handy hotel for a family. Big room and clean facilities. Not too far from Caen centre and easy parking. We only stayed for 1 day but quite enjoyed it. The staff is also very nice.
