Most visitors to Carcassonne come here for one thing: to see its fairytale, UNESCO World Heritage-listed castle sitting majestically on a hill east of the city.
Spectacularly lit at night, this Cité is a restored medieval fortress with 52 towers, 2 outer walls covering almost 2 miles, and a drawbridge providing access to a keep. Twice daily there are medieval jousting displays within the walls. This intriguing castle has enchanted so many that it has appeared in novels, films and even inspired a board game.
Some Carcassonne hotels, bars and restaurants can be found in the Cité but the majority are in the Ville Basse below. The stone Old Bridge, also lit at night, links it to the city center over the Aude River.
Central Carcassonne also has its own sights including a fine art museum and a cathedral with impressive stained-glass windows. But its best feature is the South of France way of life, with relaxed bars and sidewalk cafes, some serving the local speciality – cassoulet. Other slow-paced attractions include boat trips along the Canal du Midi and visiting villages like Minerve in the surrounding hills.
Served by national and low cost carriers, Carcassonne Airport is only 3 miles from the city center.
The "new" City is a good place to stay. It is a bit mixed with a lot of empty shops giving it a slightly run down feel. The old Cite is quite amazing especially from a distance. It is over-run with tourists but that is only to be expected. The balance between the Cite and the new City makes for an interesting contrast. The new City is old by any normal standards; it is not modern !! There are numerous great restaurants in both areas. Well worth exploring for a couple of days

Walking the ramparts of the medieval city was brilliant (helped by 36 degrees of sunshine!) and costs €12.50
Head over Pont Vieux in to the new city and find a lovely main square with good food and great people watching.
Carry on to the canal and pick up a boat trip; 1hr 15 being the shortest; we did the 2hr 45 picnic trip which was €20 each including a really nice sandwich baguette.
It was not obvious where the coach back to the airport stopped so we walked to the railway station and caught it where it starts. Well with it at €6 as the route gives you lots of new spectacular angles on the medieval city.
Great place that can be done in 2 full days (excluding travelling there and back).

An amazing city with so much to do and so many places to eat. A walk outside the city to the old bridge and parks provides a lovely panoramic. We loved L’escargot to eat at but there were plenty more to choose from. We enjoyed grabbing drinks at different bars and watching the world go buy. The fireworks on 14 July are something else! A definite must see

Carcassonne is a lovely town, the medieval city is a short walk away up hill. Two - three days is adequate to see most things in both areas. We then took the tain to nearby towns, Narbonne and Toulouse as well. Lots to see and easy to get around.
The boutique feel of the hotel was a surprise. Lots of attention to detail and very gracious, professional and helpful staff on checking in and leaving the next day. The breakfast was exceptionally good for the price. It is a quiet oasis in a buzzy area, and close to the old town and some excellent restaurants. Very good private parking at a reasonable rate. Highly recommended.
Fantastic location in the middle the old city of Carcassonne. Great (glutenfree) breakfast. Kind and helpful staff, that takes pride in the hotel. Secure parking and seamless shuttle service.
Tip: get out before breakfast for a quiet stroll around the medieval streets and along the inner walls of the city.
Perfect Stay in Carcasonne! Minutes walk from the gates of the old city, minutes from restaurants and convience shops. Quiet, comfortable and large! Ancient building with a modern interior. And fantastic host ready to answer any questions we had.
Great central location for both old town and main square only 10 min walk to both. 15mins from airport. Hotel in general nice and clean. great views of the castle if you get the correct side. Sweet treats on arrival to room was nice touch.
Beautiful historical house within walking distance of the old town, the medieval city & the canal du midi. Lovely cool air conditioned room & gorgeous breakfast served in the courtyard garden.
