To be fair, La Caverne is in Eaux Chaudes, a few miles south of Laruns. Its heyday as a spa destination has gone but there is a lovely "past elegance" about the place. Laruns is bigger and busier but still a nice town in which to spend a few hours.
Laruns is just the right size. We liked the supermarket at the edge of the village for stocking up on supplies and the artistic sculptures nearby. It's a great place to use as a base for visiting nearby attractions. We had a great meal at Restaurant L'Arregalet, good atmosphere too. The creperie in the square is very good too.
Having to wait in the car, in the town square, while a shepherd watered a large flock of sheep in the town’s fountain was fun. The town’s supermarkets and restaurants always seemed to be closed when we needed them... including some at lunchtime.
Authentic Bearnais village in Vallee d'Ossau. Sheep and cattle herded through the village. Fantastic local produce; cheese (brebis - give your digestion a boost with unpasteurise variety! - and wine...and duck...and... Pau, Oloron, Lourdes, Spanish border all very close...mountain walking opportunities a-plenty!
What a great place! Absolutely stunning views. Beautiful mountains, cliffs, rocks, scenery. So quaint, peaceful, relaxing, friendly and lovely. The food was wonderful. Park your car and walk around the lovely town. Must take the Train d'Artouste! What an incredible experience. Wish we had more time in Laruns. Highly recommend.
The cheese and wine tasting sessions with actual cheese makers, were excellent, as were the traditional folk danses shows. A nice mix of things to see, feel and try for a range of people. Communal lunches and dinners mean good food, good times and good value. Definitely, try them although it may get a bit loud when the bands get warmed up... Warning: late night singing at (or near) various drinking spots can be seriously off-key (and loud). Enjoy the village (and its restaurants) on Friday night before the actual fete and without the crowds. Saturday is good, not too crowded in the morning. It gets very crowded on Sunday, particularly in early afternoon, but if you have been there since Friday, you will be ready to leave by then...
