We went to meribel for downhill mountain biking. While there are a few red and black trails, which favour a downhill bike, most trails and tracks are better suited with an enduro bike. If you don't mind a little bit of pushing uphill, it's fine either way. Most "Bikepark" tracks are on the easier side suited well for beginners. Elite/pro tracks are harder to find, but those that exist are fun to ride with well built jumps and drops / obstacles. I wouldn't mind to have more of those though. The enduro trails are panoramic and absolutely superb. The view from the mountains is just stunning. Descent is sometimes over 1000hm which is really amazing. All three valleys can be accessed with chair lifts by a single ticket. The price is totally fair. Summed up, for hardcore Bikepark riding an area like Chatel/Avoriaz/Morzine is probably a bit better, but for a good mixture of DH/Enduro Meribel and surrounding area is just perfect. Would bring both bikes next time though ;)
I have been to Meribel for a week's skiing before and had a great time. Now I visit often for just the day as we stay in Chamagny en vanoise which is just across the valley from Courcheval and has access to la Plagne, Champagny is a cute tradition French village and just feels like you're in France unlike some other ski resorts. From here we can ski La Plagne and Les Arcs or drive 20 mins to Courcheval to mix up the week a little.
My favorite skiing village in the 3 valleys due to its combination of location, charm and facilities. Excellent for families. It is quite quiet though, if you are interested in a really lively apes ski this place is probably not for you.
Huge ski area! Quick and easy to get to all corners of the 3 valleys from Meribel although the ski map and signposting around resort can be quite tricky to figure out. Make sure you leave plenty of time to get back to the valley you're staying in as it is easy to get a bit lost! Courchevel and the Meribel altiport area are both lovely for tree lined runs. Courchevel Moriond has some excellent smooth wide runs of different gradients and is a bit quieter than other areas. Val Thorens is buzzing with life and the wide green run through town is packed but great fun. The views from runs at the top of the far side of Val Thorens (e.g. Cime, Lory) are particularly spectacular. Enjoy!
if you are an intermediate skier / border, want to ski different runs everyday and enjoy lively apres- ski with choice, Meribel is hard to beat. Connections to the airports are good and the facilities are totally geared up to get you on the slopes. there is a large British presence here and language is not a barrier. It is not cheap but you get choice and value for money whatever your budget.
Meribel has great bars and restaurants though the best on piste restaurants are on the Courcheval side which is easily accessed via the lifts up to Suleur. The amenities in Meribel are fantastic, it even has an indoor Ice rink and a professional ice hockey team. Skiing for families is best over toward the altiport and golf lifts onto Le Tougnet. There is endless skiing across to Val Thorens and it is worth considering a day trip across and back again. Apres ski tends to begin on the slopes back from Soleur starting at Les Folais Doux and on to Rond Point then into town for Le Pub and Jacks. If I were taking a family I might prefer to stay up near to Rond Point or in Meribel Village. Cheaper....
