Although Mulhouse has a colourful historic centre with cobbled squares and half-timbered houses, the city is best known for its industry. Textile production shot the city into the limelight, a fact detailed in the Museum of Printed Textiles.
The world’s largest train collection is in the multi-coloured French National Railway Museum, next to the Electropolis electricity museum. The National Automobile Museum is also the world’s largest and features the Schlumpf Collection of classic cars and an exhibition track. To the east is the Parc Expo Mulhouse event centre, while west is the train station.
The heart of the city is Place de la Réunion where pavement cafes overlook the 16th-century town hall, decorated with frescoes and a 2-sided staircase. The Mulhouse Christmas market is held here at the foot of the Protestant St Stephen’s Church with its towering spire.
The Catholic church of the same name also has a tall tower, and the Tour de l’Europe is a modern skyscraper with a restaurant on top. Its 3 sides face France, Switzerland and Germany, reflecting the history of the Alsace which was under Swiss and German rule before joining France once and for all.
EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg also serves the 3 countries, and Booking.com has a good range of luxury hotels, and cheap apartments and B&Bs nearby.
We were only on a short holiday so two days was probably about right. Mulhouse is a very pleasant town. Not as pretty as Colmar which we visited earlier in the day, but still a very pleasant and friendly place to stay. We formed the opinion that Mulhouse is probably a very stress free, and attractive place to live. We enjoyed our stay and ate very well.
Fabulous old town and part of Alsace Region - we had an afternoon and evening and could have spent the following day to maximise our trip. Lots of cafe's, bars and restaurants - very nice comfortable and safe feeling being here.
I had never really thought about Mulhouse but I chanced upon a video on YouTube which advised that it was a great location from which to travel by train to see Colmar Strasbourg etc to took a chance best decision I made Mulhouse is a nice town easy to get around and has a fantastic auto museum and good rail museum good shopping and options for eating . SNCF and local trains all over the place well worth checking out and a lot cheaper than Strasbourg etc even taking account of rail fares . Easy to use tram system and its Christmas market was really good and far fewer crowds .I would visit again .
Mulhouse is a very small city, more like a large town, it has a central square with the old buildings and church but very little else. Limited restaurants and not great customer service. It’s also worth noting that the shops are all closed on Sunday. There is a good tram system, but not much of anywhere to go! The train museum is a must and is an excellent attraction. The electricity museum is also very good, however possible aimed more at school trips and is situated next door to the train museum. We visited both, however we weren’t told at the train issue that we could have had a joint ticket for both, we were only told this afterwards at the electricity museum!
Mulhouse is easy to move around in with taxis, buses, trams and cycle tracks. The architecture is mainly 20th century with some older parts in the middle by the Rathaus. The hotel recommended a good Italian restaurant, 'Bacio'. Good shopping. Streets are clean and pleasant to walk in. Mulhouse also is home to the largest car museum in the world which is well worth a visit even for the non-petrol-heads like me! Very spacious, lots of places to sit - and eat/drink - and very kind staff who look after your menfolk's bags and coats which they leave behind...
Walking from the hotel to the city centre, the city seemed run down and dirty - there was quite a lot of litter everywhere. The people weren't the friendliest and didn't look so happy! Opposite the hotel there is some water - it was very full of algae. We did see a swan and an otter, but some boys were squirting them with a water pistol. We then saw a huge rat! The only saving grace was a cêperie we found, which I would definitely recommend! The service was friendly, quick and the food delicious. It was La Crêperie Crampous Mad. The next day we went to Le Parc du Petit Prince. We were there 6 hours and my yound son had a great time. I would say it is better for younger children, children over 10/12 may not find so much excitment.
