Located just 1640 feet from Orléans Train Station, Le Bannier Hotel Restaurant provides free WiFi access. A restaurant and a bar are at your disposal on site. Hopefully spelling their names correctly Vascon and Valene - the owners were delightful! We arrived very late but were welcomed heartily! Vascon is the chef and owner who helped my husband get the car parked and then cooked the most delicious dinner. A 3 course meal topped off a long travel day. His terrine was the best I think I've ever had! Funky fixtures in the room - really modern and cool! After dinner, Vascon came out of the kitchen and drew us a map of all the sites not to miss in Orleans! Excellent place!

Enjoyed our one night stay. Our walk to the main square and then on to the cathedral was very easy and worthwhile. The history of Orleans is very interesting, with a good deal of information of Jeanne d'Arc, of course. Lots of good bars and restaurants to choose from. Shame our hotel wasn't great, but at least it's location was, being just a comfortable walk from the main historic areas.
The old town is small, and walkable...there's also a tram...there are lovely parks, museums,,,and a tourism office...I didn't think the "La Loire in Bateau" by Bertrand Deshays was worth the time nor money...it was recommended by the Office of Tourism To go down the Loire in a boat...It was only to go in a small circle and talk about the river but one doesn't get to go very far and he charges 15 euros to sit in the boat, and hear the stories and problems...for one hour. So if you want to have a boat ride, definitely don't bother doing this.. One can walk around, see a Hotel called Groslot, visit the gardens...there are plenty of small bistrots...and local wines...
We used Orleans as a resting place and took drives in all directions, having rented a car. It is full of its own interest, of course, but you're just an hour drive to here and there, all the wonderful places around. (In my errant youth I did once move from place to place not far that I wanted to see: this is the better way.)
Lovely town to walk around. Things in easy distance from each other. Nice stop on travels in Loire Valley. Having a glass of wine at cafe across from the cathedral and enjoying the view is one reasons you come to France!
Orleans city is a great place to explore. I enjoyed the visit at the St.Croix Cathedral. The city was a bit quiet because it was a New Year's Day holiday week therefore most of the shops were closed. However we did managed to find some nice cafe for a drink. We had lunch at a Thai restaurant in the city but was really disappointed with the food quality and I feel it was a bit overpriced for the food serving portion and quality. We enjoyed the drive to visit some Chateau's nearby (about an hour drive). The best thing about visiting Orleans was we get to learn so much more about the history of France, especially about St. Jeanne d'Arc. I would love to visit Orleans again during May for the festival event of St. Jeanne d'Arc.
Orleans is a great place to begin your exploration of the Loire Valley. Many of the Chateau are within a short driving distance from this city. The city itself has a bustling shopping district with many small restaurants. It's very accessible, seems safe and friendly. We had breakfast in a bakery one morning and got to watch the baker making baguettes. It was fascinating to watch and, of course, delicious to eat. The bakery made a pastry that was like a cream puff without the cream inside, so light and perfect!
