Valberg is a nice quiet and friendly village. There are lots of beautiful walks, hikes to do, one week is not enough to do them all. You can also do moutain biking, adventure park and trails. Valberg is also a good base if you want to do more adventurous / alpine hikes, such as Mont Mounier or Lac d'Allos. I loved the three altitude restaurants: Eguilles, La Croix du Sapet and Wapiti. It is also very child friendly. Activities for children are on every weeks. Therr is also a local market every Tuesday and Saturday. I particularly enjoyed the adventure park my little boy and I did the blue path.
The property was stunning, however I very much felt that they should have closed the ski station. There was very little snow and the slopes were un-skiable, bordering on the dangerous by 1.30pm. I also didn't like the fact that the station would only offer half day ski pass after 1300. it just didn't make sense given the conditions. The station needs to think long and hard before allowing people to ski in what were ostensibly unsafe conditions.
Encouraged by recent Mega snowfall all over the area I decided to go to small resort of Valberg driving there on Saturday evening April 14. Several years ago I had been skiing there with great pleasure. The road leading to Valberg is awesome, picturesque and uniquely beautiful. Arriving at the hotel surrounded by piles of snow, some more than 10 feet high, shoveled on the side walk I had great expectations of the next day's skiing. Not so ! Hotel desk informed me that the season had ended 6 days ago, one week before the other stations, Auron and Isola 2000. The Valberg website does not clearly indicate the beginning and end of the season, which obviously had ended at a predetermined date, regardless of the excellent snow conditions. Extension by a week, or even 2 weeks, properly advertised, would have been good for the local economy ! A missed opportunity for the local tourist industry. April 15 I had a super skiing sunday in Auron instead !
Valberg is a lovely and relaxed village. There are lots of outdoor activities. The "sentier planetaire " was our favourite walk, we went twice to the crêperie l'Irlandais, they do lovely crepes and good kids menu. The "adventure park" is definately worth a go.
Valberg is primarily an alpine winter ski resort.and many shops and businesses are not open in the Summer. Our stay was in June, the weather was good and we were able to make full use of the walks, views fresh air etc. There were enough restaurants and shops open to have a choice although we ate at our hotel. There are many wonderful places to visit by car including Col des champs and Col de la cayolle. The area appeals to groups of cyclista and motor cyclists .
We love this village for skiing. It is very pretty and easy to get to and around. Great for families. Nice restaurants and good food. Great for dogs too. The snow is not always reliable but for our needs - gentle skiing with small children - it is fine, plenty of nice blue and green runs to explore.
