The Checkers is a 14th-century coaching inn located in the picturesque Kent village of Smarden. Bedrooms feature exposed wooden beams and the candlelit restaurant serves fine British cuisine. The room was lovely. We stayed in the Guinevere room (luxury double room with brass bathtub) which is spacious and has a comfortable bed and large walk in shower. The food is wonderful - all the evening meals we had were delicious. Breakfast was good with plenty of choice. Great location for visiting National Trust properties (lots in the area), as well as Leeds Castle. The village of Smarden is also pretty and worth walking round.

It was a privilege to be the first ever guests staying at this stunning hotel. We was greeted by the manager Raja on arrival and showed to our room. The room was spotless, the shower had great power and the bed was a dream sleep. We visited the famous Bangladeshi & Indian restaurant next door ‘The Raja of Kent’ the food was delicious and the staff was amazing. Jags couldn’t have done more for us! We highly recommend this peaceful, friendly, quality break in Kent which is great value for money and there is plenty of free parking. We have enjoyed ourselves so much we was sad to leave! We will definitely be returning in the near future and recommending to family and friends :) From Micky & Hayley
