Bowmore is a lovely wee town situated in the middle of the island, ideal base for exploring. Places to shop and eat out available within walking distance. Also a good chinese takeaway. The round church is a must see.
Bowmore is main town of Islay and has a few bars and Bistros aswell as the distillery. There are a few shops and it gives a good feeling of island life and easy to travel to other villages by bus, taxi, hike or cycle. Roads are narrow and twisty. Nice place.
We were lucky to have the most fabulous weather for our whisky tasting 2 days! The Bowmore distillery is in an amazing location and we loved the whisky too. Supper in the Lochside Hotel was very good afterwards. Delighted to experience the Machrie Golf Club which has been restored to a classy place! Can’t wait to come back for a game of golf there!
The people of Bowmore were warmly welcoming, in the tourist office, in the restaurants and especially in the Gaelic Centre. The Celtic Store needed so much more time than we had. The surprise was that many eateries closed from 2 - 6 and shops closed earlier than we had expected. Note to self- check times for everything and make reservations!
Fantastic part of the world. We ate at the Lochside hotel and the service was fantastic. The Bowmore distillery was the highlight. The other distilleries could learn a thing or two from them regarding service which was non existent at Ardbeg and Lagavulin. Unless you turned up there as part of a tour group, they didn't want to know you. Very disappointing as this was the reason for our visit. Anyhow still a lovely place to visit.
Bowmore and Islay is a wonderful destination if Scotch is your thing. People are so nice, distilleries great, and the isle is beautiful. Be sure to arrange your transport on and off the isle properly.
Very friendly staff. We have been upgraded to a room with lochside view, which was very comfortable. The restaurant is excellent and they have a large choice of local whisky! A great experience.
