We stayed just above Yaverland beach which is near to Brading, but Sandown is equally close and would be where most folk would walk to. Sandown has clean sandy beaches. Sandown (not Brading) is really run down ; shockingly so. Walking from Yaverland to Sandown you pass several derelict (roof's falling in, clearly not occupied for many years) old hotels on Culver Parade and further in to Sandown on the Esplanade a couple more. Many shops in Sandown closed or looking like on their last gasp. I don't think Covid was the cause, unfortunately probably pushed a few more under. Shame to see a once fine victorian town looking so bad.
Brading Sandown was lovely. Beach was very nice. Black gang chine was a massive disappointment food was expensive and awful. The rollercoaster is the only thing worth going there for. Alum bay was lovely, car park £3.00 chair lift was not working due to bad weather. The Old battery was a lovely walk. Needles are Picturesque. We ate at Flanagans in Sandown, food was very nice. We also went to the Bandstand another night food and service was lovely. Osborne house is well worth a visit we enjoyed it despite the rain. We also went to Godshill and saw the model village really great so clever. Shanklin was lovely to had tea and cake in the Tearoom it was so quaint. Lovely cake.
Being the Isle of Wight, as long as you have a car, everything is accessible. Brading as a town is not somewhere we would visit for a day but where we stayed, on the moor, is a perfect place for a break
I would certainly stay there again we loved it We walked to Sandown and the view was amazing We ate at Flanagan’s and sat in the afternoon sun on there top deck We visited Godshill which is one of my favourite places
Brading village is 1-2 miles away and walking might be difficult because of the narrow roads. It has at least three pubs with food and we found the Bugle very pleasant and friendly with decent food and a children's play area at the back. Sandown is an easy walk away from the site, with lots of things to do for all the family and a variety of eateries and shops as well as beach, dinosaur experience and zoo etc Site itself does not have shop or any other amenities we were aware of. Brilliant nature walks on the doorstep along the cliffs to Bembridge Down or to Sandown and brilliant views.
Brading is a lovely little place with a lot of history. It was interesting to know that it was once a port and the water came up to one of the pubs. One of the buildings is the oldest on the Island built in 1212, I think. Also good for history lovers is the Brading Roman Villa, £9.50 entrance fee. Fish and chip shop offer a great selection of take away food. Also Michaelangelos Italian restaurant in Ryde is only 15 minutes by car and the food is excellent value for money. Plenty of nice walks and the RSPB nature reserve is there to keep bird lovers happy.
