FAQs about hotels in Chester

A Walk Through History

Featuring half-timbered buildings, almost complete city walls and a wealth of Roman heritage, beautiful Chester sits by the border with Wales.

The southernmost gate of the walls overlooks the River Dee, and the road leading north is one of 4 in the city to follow the original Roman roads. To the east, the Roman Gardens include a reconstructed underfloor heating system.

Nearby Grosvenor Park has remains of a stone Roman amphitheatre, thought to have been built on the world’s largest wooden amphitheatre at the time. Over the river in the suburb of Handbridge is a 2nd-century shrine to Minerva, and an informative display in the Grosvenor Museum provides the background to all this heritage.

In the west is Chester Racecourse and nearby are the medieval castle remains. More medieval buildings line the cobbled city centre streets. Some of these are The Rows, black-and-white timbered buildings housing 2 levels of shops. Other shopping options are the indoor market by the cathedral, and the Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village in Ellesmere Port to the north. The road out there passes Chester Zoo, one of the UK’s best zoos.

Booking.com’s range of Chester accommodation includes hotels with swimming pools, guest houses by the train station and B&Bs with parking near Chester Airport.

What Guests Said About Chester:

  • 8.0

City itself absolutely beautiful with unique two tier shops.

City itself absolutely beautiful with unique two tier shops. Well served with jewellers and Italian restaurants almost to the exclusion of others. The Market building is closed which is a shame, the Food Court close by is well worth a visit and has some excellent shops as well. Good Pubs abound. Unfortunately we were unable to walk far and did not fully explore the parks, churches and Roman Area but what we saw was well woth the effort.

Chester is a lovely city centre to explore.

Chester is a lovely city centre to explore. The cathedral is magnificent but we queued up, missed the sign outside saying the Naive was closed from 1.00 to 3.00pm. there were several hundreds people upset and or complaining and really let down. The only let down of our visit. We paid but did not get to see the gem of the cathedral. Such a shame.p

Chester has always been one of our favorite places to go on...

Chester has always been one of our favorite places to go on a day trip and to stay for a couple of nights. It's easy to get to on the train from Aintree railway station. Our last stay was November 1st-3rd, stayed in a really lovely accommodation, The Grosvenor Place guesthouse, we would highly recommend. We had a bit of rain but there is always somewhere to go and sit in and have a meal or tea and cake. Our place to eat is Wetherspoons, great meals for a reasonable price and our place for tea and cake is Costa, also we had our breakfast here. Our pastime is Geocaching, Chester is a good area for this plus the bus services are good to take you to other areas.

A beautiful and historic walled city with a lot of history...

A beautiful and historic walled city with a lot of history and original buildings. Loads of well known stores and loads of independents, and lots of lovely traditional pubs. The walk around the walls is really nice, and takes about 40 minutes at a steady stroll. A lovely place to visit.
