FAQs about hotels in Chester

A Walk Through History

Featuring half-timbered buildings, almost complete city walls and a wealth of Roman heritage, beautiful Chester sits by the border with Wales.

The southernmost gate of the walls overlooks the River Dee, and the road leading north is one of 4 in the city to follow the original Roman roads. To the east, the Roman Gardens include a reconstructed underfloor heating system.

Nearby Grosvenor Park has remains of a stone Roman amphitheatre, thought to have been built on the world’s largest wooden amphitheatre at the time. Over the river in the suburb of Handbridge is a 2nd-century shrine to Minerva, and an informative display in the Grosvenor Museum provides the background to all this heritage.

In the west is Chester Racecourse and nearby are the medieval castle remains. More medieval buildings line the cobbled city centre streets. Some of these are The Rows, black-and-white timbered buildings housing 2 levels of shops. Other shopping options are the indoor market by the cathedral, and the Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village in Ellesmere Port to the north. The road out there passes Chester Zoo, one of the UK’s best zoos.

Booking.com’s range of Chester accommodation includes hotels with swimming pools, guest houses by the train station and B&Bs with parking near Chester Airport.

Beautiful place, mix of lively and relaxation, plenty to do and plenty to see, Chester zoo is great and the centre has plenty to offer from a variety of foods to drinking establishments as well as activities to choose from.

A great place for a short stay.

A great place for a short stay. Plenty of streets to wander around. Great architecture. The cathedral is highly worth a visit for ornate gothic splendour (far more impressive on the inside than the impression from outside). Well located for other places; Liverpool and Manchester easy to get to by train. Lots of coffee shops, eateries.

Well worth a visit if you are in the area for another reason...

Well worth a visit if you are in the area for another reason. Probably not a destination in itself to travel 200 miles for. We were there to go to the zoo, and stayed another day to see Chester. The town is a pedestrianised area during the day. The walk around the walls, about 2 miles, is very much worth a go, but there are lots of steps and uneven surfaces, so best avoided by those who are not sure footed. The architecture in town is worth seeing. A mixture of very old, new, and pretending to be very old. A strange arrangement of two tier shop fronts with a gallery walk way on the older buildings was very quaint and unusual. Lots of variety of shops, bars, and restaurants. The town hall is magnificent. The food hall in the Chester Market just up the road from it looked great, with a huge amount of choice. The cathedral is interesting, but we are spoiled by having long experience of Durham cathedral, which is superior in every respect.

    Great destination venue.

Great destination venue. City small enough to explore and large enough to keep you interested and happy. Great for history from Roman ruins, City walls, and cobbled streets of Tudor houses. Loads of bars and restaurants to enjoy.

Excellent facilities, very clean, easy to reach town, food great - breakfast and dinner, well stocked bar. Our room was a great size, overlooking the canal. The spa was an excellent end to a tiring day exploring the walls and city. The staff were all very helpful and friendly, especially our waiter who seemed to work every shift with a cheery greeting and chat - sorry, didn't get his name. Fantastic hotel, will return when we next visit Chester.

This hotel is ideally situated a few minutes walk from Chester’s city centre restaurants, bars and other attractions. Although it’s not the most attractive building externally the room and bathroom we had both looked as if they had been recently refurbished. The young lady who checked us in was a pleasure to deal with - friendly, welcoming, polite and helpful.
