Featuring half-timbered buildings, almost complete city walls and a wealth of Roman heritage, beautiful Chester sits by the border with Wales.
The southernmost gate of the walls overlooks the River Dee, and the road leading north is one of 4 in the city to follow the original Roman roads. To the east, the Roman Gardens include a reconstructed underfloor heating system.
Nearby Grosvenor Park has remains of a stone Roman amphitheatre, thought to have been built on the world’s largest wooden amphitheatre at the time. Over the river in the suburb of Handbridge is a 2nd-century shrine to Minerva, and an informative display in the Grosvenor Museum provides the background to all this heritage.
In the west is Chester Racecourse and nearby are the medieval castle remains. More medieval buildings line the cobbled city centre streets. Some of these are The Rows, black-and-white timbered buildings housing 2 levels of shops. Other shopping options are the indoor market by the cathedral, and the Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village in Ellesmere Port to the north. The road out there passes Chester Zoo, one of the UK’s best zoos.
Booking.com’s range of Chester accommodation includes hotels with swimming pools, guest houses by the train station and B&Bs with parking near Chester Airport.
Beautiful old city with plenty to see and do. Great Christmas events and markets. Great shopping both small independent shops and retail outlets. Easy to use Chester as a base to explore Wales and the North West. The zoo was fabulous and animals well cared for and great enclosures.

Excellent city for shopping and getting around.
Excellent city for shopping and getting around. Bars and Restaurants were good. Our Hotel - The Mill Hotel & Spa - was located in a very good walking distance to get into the city. Chester Zoo was good but very expensive. Ate at the Pied Bull (which you can stay at as well) and decided on an Italian on the Saturday night - La Fattoria - we hadn't booked but called them and they managed to fit us in albeit we had to wait about 20 mins but when you've opened a bottle - quite nice to take in the ambience. Very good eating places. The Boot Inn upstairs in the shopping area is a very old Inn and worth a visit.

Riverboat cruise was very good as was walking the city walls. Lovely cathedral with Xmas trees light up . Zoo a little disappointing at this time of year…. Many animals sensibly under cover. Interesting architecture. Felt safe at night. Xmas Fair was ok but, for our liking, too much food and drink and not enough Christmas nick nacks.

It is a lovely historic hotel. Our room was beautifully presented with a lovely bathroom.
We requested two twin rooms for our three-night stay and they were side-by-side.
Obviously very close to the railway station and walkable into the city centre.
Delicious and plentiful breakfast which really set us up for our days out.
We were friends from Chester College (University) days enjoying a reunion and the hotel was a good place to stay.
Excellent location for city centre attractions. Very well decorated and maintained hotel. Owner exceptionally helpful, he even carried my bike through the hotel and loaded it onto my bike rack in the rear car park for me. I will definitely stay again if visiting Chester.
The facilities at the hotel were excellent with the Spa and gym and swimming pool. The location is also good, a very short drive out of Chester City Centre. The rooms were quite spacious and the staff were willing even if they couldn't help.
The hotel was clean and smelt amazing. Great atmosphere inside. The bedrooms were quirky and clean. The temperature was spot on and the bed so comfortable. Great location if coming to Chester by train and close to the city centre.
I have visited Mill Spa in Chester quite a few times now. The Hotel is 2 mins from city centre has a large bar area with food and the staff are very polite and helpful I would recommend Mill Spa 100%
