Durham could definitely be one of those towns that appear in fairy tales and stories of kings and knights. Lying on a hilled peninsula formed by the Wear River, the striking cathedral overlooks from the hilltop, surrounded by the castle, palaces and historic buildings. Get transported back in time by the magic of this English jewel, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Though archaeological evidence suggests the area has been inhabited since 2000 BC, the present-day settlement was founded by monks from Lindisfarne in 995, choosing the area as the final resting place of Saint Cuthbert. Symeon of Durham stated once that ‘to see Durham is to see the English Zion, and by doing so one may save oneself a trip to Jerusalem’. Hotels and B&Bs in Durham’s historic centre are a popular choice to enjoy this historic legacy.
Its powerful religious position granted such great honour to the city, that the bishop still holds the rights to a seat in the House of Lords, and to accompany the sovereign at the coronation. During the 19th century and encompassing the industrial revolution, the university was founded, with Durham Castle becoming its first college.

We enjoyed the cathedral and castle.
We enjoyed the cathedral and castle. The trip to beamish museum was excellent but we needed a full day but by the time we worked the buses out to get to the museum we only had 5 hours there. The trams at museum need more to transport the crowd! When busy in school holidays!

Fantastic location pub with restaurant right next door food...
Fantastic location pub with restaurant right next door food was excellent, beer not so. Only a short walk to the Bus Stop into Durham. The cottage had everything you need to Cook with and the host left milk and Cookies on arrival along with Tea Sugar and Coffee. Shame the TV didn't work but we weren't there to watch it, we kept up with the news on our own devices.

Durham is beautiful and the cathedral and castle are magical.
The cathedral is truly one of the best building I’ve ever seen. It even looks beautiful in the rain.
Best to walk up from the river to get the true experience, it’s steep but lots of seats to rest if needed.

We stayed 2 nights in the area and that was about right to see the city as it is not very big. The cathedral is stunning in size and scale, and the Palace Green area is impressive. The castle was closed off during our visit, but it is university accommodation anyway. The riverside walk is well worth doing.

Beautiful city with historic sites - castle and cathedral...
Beautiful city with historic sites - castle and cathedral etc. Plenty of places to eat, drink and shop. It is all very clean - no litter, dog's mess or graffiti and the public spaces (parks etc) are all very well kept.
We travelled by train and then went out for a couple day trips by bus. Bus station is very efficient.
Check in is quick and easy.
The staff were all professional, courteuos and helpful
The rooms are a good size and the beds are very comfortable.
We'd definitely stay here again
The rooms were a fair price when the other hotels in Durham were ripping people off because it was graduation week at the university
We booked the hotel for its proximity to Durham University and we were not disappointed. Within minutes, we were on the Bailey. Due to the university event, breakfast was full of parent + young person pairs and there was plenty of food and beverages. The staff was very friendly. I'll certainly be back.
Quiet location, little bit out of city centre but good transport links and walkable. Loved the apartment, warm and cosy but plenty of space and good facilities. I felt like I could really relax there after exploring Durham and nearby places during the day. Would definitely book it again.
The room was comfortable, well equipped and clean. The Continental breakfast was diverse, tasty and well presented. The pub is a short and pleasant riverside walk from Durham city centre and is also served by a pretty frequent bus service into Durham.
The hotel was perfectly placed for a quick stroll into the city centre. The staff were really friendly and very helpful. The room was perfect. It was really clean and well appointed.
