Gilsland
Located in the small village of Gilsland, The Samson Inn is a cozy village pub a short walk from Hadrian’s Wall. With free Wi-Fi access and free on-site parking, this inn is 19 miles from Carlisle. The staff were genuinely warm and helpful, the room was huge and picture-book perfect (19C fireplace) huge bed, fantastic shower. And then there was the excellent food and grog in the bar. I will go again.

Gilsland was a stop-off point for us walking Hadrian's Wall Path. Due to various mishaps, I felt almost ready to give up but our lovely overnight stay here put me back in the right frame of mind to continue the next day. Very quiet village, a good pub to eat in at night and just minutes from the HW Path.
The hotel was in an excellent location for Hadrians wall and other main towns and cities. Although the hotel was in need of some TLC it was very clean and comfortable. The food served in the bar was excellent
This hotel is set in stunning grounds with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside . The hotel is a beautiful building but the interior is tired and needing attention , but not to the extent of being awful or wasting the 5 nights we spent there . The staff are wonderful and couldn't do enough to help , and the food was delicious, I have coeliac disease therefore have to stick to a gluten free diet which is another thing that this hotel managed to cater for , although the buffet breakfast was a bit if a problem for me , but lunch and dinners were fine . It was a bonus for my husband and I being able to take our dog on this holiday with us . It is also ideally situated to visit tourist attractions such as Hadrians wall . The nearby town of Brampton is worth a visit as is the market town of Hexham .
Large, country hotel in a remote location with fantastic views. Well maintained gardens and a bowling green and putting green. Went there on a coach trip with friends and on discovering they were dog friendly went back a couple of weeks later with my partner and 2 dogs. It’s a good base for exploring both Cumbria and Northumberland as it is on the border. The rooms are quite basic and in need of updating but clean and comfortable. The buffet breakfast was delicious and plentiful, the evening meal in the dining room was mostly good and the bar meals very good. There are walks from the doorsteps (there are printed routes on reception) although we found them a bit too challenging after a period of wet weather. Will definitely return.
The Staff were very good, always chatty with a smile even at breakfast. The food was very good and the location quiet in the evening which was how we like it. Evening entertainment was also very good. Travel was easy and we travelled extensively around the area. Local walks were good and very interesting
It’s fantastic that this hotel is pet friendly & it’s in a beautiful location. But it’s not what you expect when you get there. Staff are very friendly & helpful but hotel is very dated & needs a good over haul. Rooms are like stepping back in time with very old dated furniture and fittings, broken wardrobes dated bathroom suite even though saying that shower was fantastic! Very powerful. It was clean but not worth the money we spent on our stay. Food was basic ‘pub’ food and the whole place needs modernising in our view. Will probably not stay again as it makes out in the pictures it’s a beautiful hotel but in reality it isn’t.

I stayed at 5 different hotels/B&B's while walking Hadrian's Wall and this was the best of them all, great location, excellent spacious accommodation with first class facilities, brilliant hosts who couldn't do enough to help, and a lovely breakfast. Would definitely stay again.
