Lovely compact city that is easy to explore in full on foot. The city has some historic beautiful architectural jewels in and around the cathedral and historic quayside quarters. Some great little pubs are hidden down the backstreets. The city centre has a good amount of varied local and national shops. The downside, the streets all need a good deep clean, even allowing for the time of year we visited. The upside, cathedral, quayside Llanthony Secunda Priory, surrounding Cotswold countryside.
We liked the historical city and the dock land area. We didn't like the new inn hotel not serving food after 4o;lock Monday to Thursday also there was a lot of rough sleepers in shop doorways at night in the day time.
Gloucester city centre felt slightly down at heel, not unusual in these difficult times. Cathedral and its associated buildings well worth a look, and lunch at the adjacent Monk's Kitchen was good. Also recommend the British Waterways Museum at the docks. Highlight of our trip was a visit to WWT Slimbridge, pricey admission but worth every penny. Also enjoyed exploring Chedworth Roman villa and the Corinium museum at the lovely old town of Cirencester.
Good choice of pubs and eating places. Wonderful Cathedral. Do a walk of the churches (simply as some sort of route to follow) and keep your eyes open and upward. It takes 1 hour for a complete amble around Gloucester. Fountain inn for a very nice welcome and good, affordable pub food. Gloucester has a myriad of people. It's not as high end as Cirencester but it's also not Croydon!
If you like Historical monuments, Pedestrianised shopping , olde worlde pubs , Modernised Docks/waterways attractions ( waterside bars, restaurants , outlets, antique shops) And a Magnificent Cathedral, Gloucester is for you.We loved it . Everything in walking distance and easy to find. Check out the waterside Brewpub and a Greek restaurant to follow !
Once in the centre of Gloucester all attractions are close at hand. If you love history you will love Gloucester. Just remember to look up when walking round as you could miss so much. Gloucester Cathedral is wonderful and there are guides on hand to show you around if you want. I would recommend a guide around the Cathedral as you could miss so much. You can also book various walks around Gloucester depending on your particular interest. Look on line for more information.
The position right in the middle of Gloucester and near the Cathedral was perfect. No car park at hotel but one nearby, 5-10 minute walk depending on mobility and it was quite cheap for Saturday/Sunday £8 for the two days. Finding the entrance to the car park was hazardous!!! Staff at hotel were very friendly and helpful. Bed was very comfortable and room was quite spacious as was the bathroom. Meals in hotel were excellent and lunch was reasonably priced (carvery) Able to leave luggage at hotel having checked out.
Gloucester
I booked Friar Tucks as I was doing the Gloucester Half Marathon the next day. I needed somewhere close to the start that would provide a comfy bed so I could wake up refreshed. Friar Tuck ticked those boxes and the room was excellent - really comfy & clean. The ensuite was also clean (possibly a little cramped if you're a larger person). TV, kettle (& tea & coffee etc), wardrobes, spacious room. Really friendly landlord who was eager to help and had a great personality.
Gloucester
The hotel didn't give a good first impression. The main bar has a shabby feel, and the outside clearly needs a bit of attention. But the new owners are keen to transform it into something special. We arrived early, but were given a lovely wecome. FREE cheesy dorritos and dips while we waited! Our room was much smarter and very comfortable.
Gloucester
The food was good with generous portions. Some attempt at social distancing was made by the hotel management although nothing was explained at check in. Instead pieces of paper with instructions were blue tacked around the hotel. The location is ideal for access to Cheltenham and Gloucester.
Gloucester
Friendly and helpful proprietors. Good clean accommodation. Good location in walking distance for the centre of Gloucester. Good quality breakfasts, with home made bread and other homemade items available. Free off road parking. Reasonable value.
excellant. city centre hotel, room good size, tv large, fridge and micro wave, all clean, bed comfortable. Went to gloucester to watch a rugby match at Kingshome. 15 minutes easy walk. City centre car parking across the road
Gloucester
Small hotel on the outskirts of the city but easy to walk to Gloucester via a country park. The food is all freshly cooked with good size portions. The breakfast menu was particularly good.
The hotel was so expensive that I thought I was in for a good treat. Alas it was a 2-star experience overall. Location was so far away; room was quite small for even one guest 😡😡
Very friendly, clean, very adequate breakfast excellent location for Gloucester and the cotswolds would certainly use the hotel again and recommend it to friends and family
The hotel rooms are lovely warm and clean. Staff are very helpful. Beds are comfy with lovely warm showers. Stayed here about 7 times now best place in Gloucester.
I liked the pool and jacuzzi area as this was a feature of the hotel. I'm afraid that there was not much else good about it. Our stay at Gloucester
We didn't eat at the hotel. Used the excellent location to explore places to eat in Gloucester
