John O'Groats is one of those places that you have to see, just to say that you've been there. There are a lot of places nearby to visit - Dunnet Head, Duncansby Stacks - and it is a good place to stay to catch the ferry to Orkney. The village is a little run down but it is clear that the village is going through some improvements which will hopefully change that. However, wherever you go, it is the people who are important, and we found the villagers to be friendly and helpful. You will find somewhere comfortable to stay, somewhere nice to eat and also some wonderful places to visit. And don't forget to get a photo with the signpost!
Having travelled through John O'Groats in the past I wondered if there was enough to do for the kids. I wasn't disappointed. The kids loved the freedom to run around, go on walks, down at the seashore, around the harbour. It was a brilliant way to spend New Year and get away from the hustle and bustle.
John O'Groats was a perfect place to spend the night after returning on the Ferry from the Orkneys. Apart from it being the most northerly point on mainland Britain, there a several interesting hikes, but not much else. We stayed in the newer annex of the Seaview Hotel. Rooms were modern and comfortable. We ate a good dinner at the hotel. We did not have breakfast since we wanted to get a picnic brunch/lunch for a change.
JoG is the complete opposite to the blatant commercialisation and profiteering one experiences at Lands End. Just two quid to park all day with lots of little cottage industries and shops to keep you occupied for a couple of hours. The little bistro in the corner with its colourful exterior is highly recommended for its service, food, cheerful staff and cleanliness. Duncansby Head is not far away and that is also worth a visit, along with a walk across the cliffs to view the famous sea stacks. We stayed at the Seaview Hotel and it was much better than expected for a hotel located in such a remote corner of the British Isles, great staff and food.
Stop in take a pic at "the end" of the UK, but no more! Other than that, and the view of the islands on a clear day, there's nothing there. Male sure to make the trip out to Dunnet or Duncansby Heads though which offer spectacular scenery
This was a fabulous property with everything a weary traveller could want. We had a studio apartment, and the space was appreciated after spending time in one room b&b's. The shower was fantastic - as was the opportunity to fix a light meal in the kitchen. Highly recommended.
John O Groats
The property was warm and cosy. The kettle has been put on for us as we arrived. The host was welcoming and relaxed. Great short walk to the nearby pub, and to John o Groats centre. Take a torch though if you are planning walking back in the dark. Breakfast was continental and very good.
