We were only in Lauder for a short time but will be returning in the future. There's a lot to see in the locality - for a start its only a few miles north of Hadrian's Wall which we want to visit again.
Stayed at Thirlestane Castle (fabulous), which is well worth a visit even if you are not staying there. Traditional old fashioned town, still with its butchers, baker, greengrocer, deli etc. Had a nice meal in the Back Bull. On the southern upland way (a coast to coast trail) if you are into walking
Lauder is a small town with a few shops and is in a good position fir visiting the larger towns around and Edinburgh as well as the many stately homes in this area of the borders, As well as the Black Bull Hotel restaurant the Firebrick Restaurant is excellent too and the Fat Cat Gallery coffee shop is a comfy place for coffee and cake! Thirlstane Castle situated behind the main road is well worth a visit, set in it own estate.
Very comfortable stay. Unfortunately Thirlestane Castle hadn't re-opened from lock down, though I did know this when I booked. Otherwise a welcome break in a long but beautiful journey. So good to feel some normality returning after lock down
