FAQs about hotels in Milton Keynes

A Hub of Entertainment

Best known for its concrete cows and legendary roundabout system, Milton Keynes is just off the M1 motorway linking Birmingham and London. Its proximity to the latter triggered its development from village to new town in the 1960s.

Milton Keynes Village still exists, between tranquil Ouzel Valley Park and Willen Lake with its peace pagoda and watersports. Next door, Gulliver’s Land children’s theme park is bordered by the Grand Union Canal, whose banks have cycle and footpaths.

In the town centre is the aptly named MK Hub, an entertainment core near the train station. In addition to accommodation, bars and restaurants, it houses the huge Xscape complex, comprising the Airkix Indoor Skydiving centre, cinemas, and the UK’s largest indoor ski slope. Nearby are the shops of Centre: MK and Midsummer Place.

On the town’s outskirts is the National Bowl entertainment venue, and Bletchley Park, where the German Enigma code was cracked during World War II. To the east Woburn Abbey has a large safari park, while north-west is Silverstone, home of the British Grand Prix. The Red Bull Racing F1 team are based in Milton Keynes, and the MK Dons are the local football team. The Open University is also headquartered here.

Of the many Milton Keynes hotels, apartments and B&Bs on Booking.com, most have parking and some have swimming pools.

There was quite a lot of parking and plenty of different places to eat to suit everyone’s taste! The theatre is brilliant with an excellent standard of show at reasonable prices and with good facilities. The pirate crazy golf is also good.

I love the roundabouts in MK, the MKOne Malls are ideal for a one-stop shopping experience. Everything you need is within a reasonable distance. Activities for family and young adults at the Xscape during the day; not to forget the mix of restaurants(Wagamama is so Yummy), and wine bars with various music hotspots to suit you from contemporary to old school music. You are also a train ride away from London City, should you decide on a visit to the bright lights of the West End.

MK was designed as a New Town in the 1960s and 1970s and has a unique and interesting layout, which keeps pedestrians separate from the traffic in most of the City. It was designed with plenty of open space and trees, so there are quiet places like the Fred Roche gardens to discover in the City Centre. I enjoyed an excellent lunch with friends at the Cock Hotel, one of the traditional coaching inns in Stony Stratford, one of the historic towns now incorporated at the edge of the City. We then enjoyed a pleasant walk, following a town trail along the High Street and through the fields around the town. MK is very much designed around the car. As a non-driver I find the public transport is the worst feature of the City.

It is a modern city on a unique plan, designed to keep vehicles and pedestrians separate, so there are plenty of footpaths, There are many active local community groups and I enjoyed a charity concert given by the Milton Keynes (MK) Community Choir. There is a good variety of restaurants and I enjoyed lunch at the Italian restaurant in the Cultural Quarter. I also enjoyed the current exhibition, 'MK Calling', at the Milton Keynes Gallery. As a non-driver, I find the worst aspect of Milton Keynes is the public transport.

I visit Milton Keynes for work on a monthly basis and this has become my venue of choice to stay over the night before. The reception staff are first class and the housekeeping staff are a pleasure to bump into. Nothing is too much trouble for any of them and they are always willing to help. We are now on first name terms, which is always a nice touch, even though I'm not that memorable but I do have a tendency to get lost sometimes! Overall, I prefer this place to some of the more upmarket hotels nearby.
