Donnington Grove is set on the outskirts of Newbury, overlooked by the historic Donnington Castle. The photos on this site don't do the place justice. It's spectacular, serene and relaxing, all at the same time. The bar's good, it's a pleasant stroll into Newbury and the full English breakfast is delicious. I didn't want to leave and will be back one day.

It was rather a mixed bag. Emails to reservations were completely ignored. I should have been allocated a disabled room but in arrival found that I had been allocated a normal room and no disabled room was available. Good that the parking charge was not to be applied, only to find that on the final bill it was included. Breakfast was very very poor. Cereals etc were very good but there isn't a lot that go wrong with cereals. The cooked breakfast was stone cold and edible. On the whole not a very pleasant experience.
Newbury town was good with a lot of choices for food n entertainment shopping n places to visit nearby towns and places of interest N Wessex Downs AONB near Hungerford lovely toby carvery meal on Sunday night in Newbury travelling around could be a bit tricky at first due to one way system n gps playing up
Newbury has some very pretty buildings and a walk by the canal is a must. It is easy walking in the town centre and there is a good mixture of shops although some have closed. Many of the eateries seem to have closed presumably because of the pandemic , and a revival is required. We ate at Weavers cafe -- we do not recommend it -- and at the Tiny Cafe opposite the Hotel .. that's a must as well. We travelled to Newbury to attend a gig at the Arlington Arts Centre - that is definitely recommended (but avoid the beer!)
We cannot recommend The Ibex too highly .The road signs were well placed and easily recognisable.Nathan and the staff were very welcoming. Our room was exceptionally nice .The food ,on arrival and breakfast was amazing .
Newbury is a quaint historic market town, with an old market square which is a tourist attraction. There also a modern pedestrianised high street and shopping centre which provides for every need. Good restaurants, pubs and tea shops. Situated on the Avon and Kennet canal, Newbury is the perfect starting point for long, picturesque country walks alongside the canal. You can even hire a long boat here if you wish.
I used to live in Newbury 50 years ago and it is still a very pleasant and apparently thriving market town (we have visited many such towns that are now rather down at heal) with all the facilities you would expect and plenty to do in the surrounding countryside.
Staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. The room and bed were both huge and the view was beautiful, despite the rain. The modern bathroom was spotless with underfloor heating and lovely fixtures. The bar did great, reasonably priced food. Breakfast was decent and good value for money. It's no distance from Newbury town centre either. The price we paid was very good value for money. Room has an iron, bathrobes, slippers, etc - so very well equipped. Would definitely stay again.
My wife and I, along with my parents, had a great stay at the Dolphin. The hotel is full of character and the staff was super friendly. We did not eat at the pub restaurant, but took advantage of their great beer selection. The bathrooms in both of our rooms appeared to be newly renovated and were very nice. The rest of the room was great as well, with decor seeming to have been recently updated.
Newbury
The location is great for the surrounding area, with Newbury less than 15 minutes away. There's ample parking and it was easy to find being not too far off the main road. The outside of the pub and accomodation house looked lovely and there was little to no noise at night.
The staff were very friendly and attentive. The spa facilities were lovely and relaxing 😌 the hotel itself is beautiful day and night! Love that we had a fridge in our room with some water and milk in, and also robes and slippers provided! 😊
A very modern, friendly and smart hotel. The rooms aren’t small, it’s the beds that are so big!! The cooked breakfast comes highly recommended! Loads of free parking and just a 10 min walk into central Newbury - I’ll be back again!
We had visited Highclere castle and this was a great place to stay after. We were very pleased with it's location and could do some shopping and explore Newbury town centre on foot without needing our car.
