Rooms were excellent we stayed in rooms 2 and 3. We booked the Xmas eve and day on arrival the rooms were nice and toasty they looked recently decorated but apparently we're done sometime ago.

So many things for kids to do, grounds and hotel itself were really nice and the view was awesome :) rooms were great and it was evident that they had really thought about families and what they need. Food in the hotel was nice too!

What a beautiful hotel. We extended our stay and were very happy to have done so . It's spotless, huge, beautifully furnished and decorated. It's a very old building and listed so I don't understand some of the negative reviews. I love the original fixtures and fittings, huge original sash windows, spotless room and immaculate shower room. Never slept so well. Our bed was so comfy and bedding/ towels etc still warm and spotless . Loved the mini soaps and shower gels, loads of tea,coffee, milk and sugar. Iron and hair dryer in the room with an ironing board just outside. Lots of traffic but the curtains are thick enough so' s not to notice. Lovely little balcony with chairs. We had a smart room which is something we've never heard of so it was quite the novelty pushing a button to close the curtains! We had read some reviews regarding breakfasts. I don't know why. It doesn't state anywhere that full English is on the menu or that they are made to order so when breakfast was bought out to my hubby, he ate it and enjoyed it very much. In my view the Carlton is better than The Royal which has over the years gone somewhat downhill. Honestly priced, really good value for money. What more does a customer want. It's perfect and we are booking again for the new year. Will be making the Carlton our place from home to stay in future. + Thank you for your hospitality. Lovely to meet you ).

The location was perfect for our swcp walk. The staff were very friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble for any of them.A beautiful old building with an open fire to sit and enjoy a beer after our walk. Good hearty breakfast. Had a great stay.
