Ripon is a very interesting little city. Most of the attractions a within a quite compact area. it is self evident that the Cathedral is interesting but a little more digging can reveal how this historic little place has evolved. Each of the 3 little museums is well worth a visit. A walk around the town will show the visitor Ripon's large market square dominated by a tall obelisk and the elaborately decorated Town Hall. A gentle stroll through the town's narrow streets with their quaint medieval names will take you some picturesque riverside areas and a canal. Ripon town centre has a varied array of artisanal shops. Proper butchers, bakers, pie shops and a cafe specialising in pancakes stand side by side with restaurants and sandwich shops. The side streets reveal even more restaurants to suit all tastes as well as traditional pubs and art galleries. There are pleasant parks and gardens to sit and relax. if you want to leave the town such attractions as Fountains Abbey, Studley Royal water gardens and the thrills of the Lightwater Valley theme park are a short drive away. All this is set in some stunning Yorkshire countryside for use by walkers, cyclists and drivers alike. A visit to the Tourist Information office within the town hall is a must. The enthusiastic staff can find something of interest for everyone.
Attractive old town with interesting buildings around the market square. Cathedral, old prison, workhouse etc all open to the public. Lovely walk to canal where there are boat trips. Good location for attractions such as Fountains Abbey and James Herriott's town of Thirsk where there is an interesting museum in his old vet practice premises
The Cathedral looked amazing and some of the restaurants and shops were very good. Only dined out once in Ripon and that was in a Wetherspoons pub...that wasn't very good but the day after I saw some great restaurants round the corner from Wetherspoons. Getting around the centre of Ripon was easy and pleasant but I would avoid the White horse pub as a place to stay....it was awful.
Hotel is right on the market square so location is excellent. Most shops are independent and there is a market on the square every Thursday, just opposite the hotel. Meals and drinks at the hotel are very reasonably priced as are the room prices. The cathedral is only a couple of minutes walk from the hotel.
Visited Ripon many times and always enjoy our stay. Enjoyed visiting the cathedral and the first day of the market. Plenty of places to visit within a short drive although on this visit business was the main reason for the trip

Room was spacious. En-suite bathroom also spacious. Staff was friendly and helpful. I would stay again there if I happen to visit Ripon again.
