Tiverton (Near Silverton)
One of Devon's most beautiful wedding venues and bed and breakfast breaks, this 14th century castle nestles in a valley surrounded by 30 acres of lush green land. This is an extraordinary destination. It's a castle with beautifully restored rooms. It is more of a quiet retreat than a place of activity. (Although there is a nice guided walk.) It's geared toward weddings, so you'll need to find dining options outside the hotel. Fortunately there is a fantastic pub called Cadeleigh Arms within a short drive. Owner gave us a history lesson of the castle, showed us its museum-quality artifacts, and let us into the adjacent ~AD 600 chapel. Very good value.

Silverton is a quiet village situated around 10 miles outside of Exeter. It has a small shop, a couple of pubs & lots of older housing, many buildings with thatched roofs. It also has a reasonable bus service on a route between Exeter & Tiverton, that allowed me to have a car-free day on my break. The peace & quiet of the rural location was much appreciated!
I've just returned from three nights at the Silverton Inn. Shane and his beautiful wife Amanda made me feel welcome straight away. I was informed about various details including wifi codes and places to park. Althought there is no on site parking there is plenty of on street parking close at hand and during my coming and goings I never found it a problem. I was staying on business and had room 4. This was comfortable enough and the compact bathroom had a great shower. I took meals, including the delicious breakfast in the bar. I found all of the staff friendly and helpful and it was good to relax with a few drinks at the bar in the evenings. There is a varied menu and Shane is famous for his pies. Siverton is a small village and it was interesting to meet some of the locals, all of whom were happy to exchange a few words with me, a total stranger. There is a well stocked village shop and a little antique shop which is worth a visit if you can find it open. I did have a little trouble negotiating some of the country lanes since directions on google maps changed every time I made the same journey of six miles. This all added to the charm of my visit. I'm well used to country lanes but round there they are on a whole new level!
Silverton inn is a lovely old pub set in a charming village with beautiful countryside. It was suitably placed to enjoy both the countryside and Exeter. It was easy to get there by car from Exeter Airport without the need to go into the city. It is on a local bus route. Extensive menu for evening meals and a good breakfast.
Teeny place. Big personality. Picturesque, quiet, beautiful. Breakfast was amazing. Staff are amazing. I arrived after closing and I was sent instructions and a telephone number on how to access my room. My key was left in a secure lock box and the staff asked if everything was fine about getting there late. Nothing is above the service.
Silverton
We have stayed at the Silverton Inn before. The fact that we returned shows that we liked it, and it was at least as good this time, if not better. The rooms are comfortable, very well decorated and equipped. Everything worked, which is more than can be said for the much more well-known hotel we had stayed at the night before. The staff were all lovely, and the food and beer were excellent. We shall certainly return if we need to stay in that area again.
