My place of birth. Somethings have chaged a lot over 34 years. However still a great place to visit especially for children beach and loads of rides and some are free. The pier is till my happy place at the end. Love the train still working on the pier. Many childhood memories.
I liked going to the town I didn’t like when I went shopping they would not take my Scottish money. I even went to a bank to change my money because no shop would take it even the bus driver would not take it on bus trip. The bank refused change my money . It made fell like I was a nobody and bad person
Southend has picked up from being a shabby remnant of the 50-80s playground for east Londoners. As well as the seafront around the pier, there is Old Leigh, which is very much worth a visit, as is the priory. Shopping is good and there is no end to the number of cafes, eateries and pubs you can visit. Its proximity to London and two train line that can take you there makes day trips to 'the smoke' easy.
We liked that the hotel had shops and a McDonald's on the door step We didn't like paying £10 per night for parking on hotel grounds. The staff were. Friendly and helpful. The room was clean and comfortable.
Loved our stay at Southend . We ate at the Weatherspoon's Last Post the food was good value for money. Stayed at the hotel there which is handy for the town and the seafront. Went on the open top bus which was fun going through Leigh on sea and Westcliff with lovely sea views. We love going up the pier on the pier train its lovely to see the sea from there.
Sadly city is dying, year after year – more businesses are closing, the removing public toilets, and city centre is full of homeless, drunks, addicts and suspicious folks - especially after 18.00. Crazy thing is that during the day, when it’s peaceful and nice – there are tones of police, but when they are needed in the evenings – 0! All is super expensive, and I do not see a reason for future to spend holidays up there – top up it all with unpredictable British weather, and it’s sounds like receipt for aboard holidays like in Malta, Canaries ect.
Extremely helpful staff, beyond expectations, the lady who booked us in sorted out a car park payment app for me on my phone and helped me make the payment. I really don't think I could have done it myself. Another lady showed us how to use the plastic cards that open the hotel entrance doors for late night entrance after the hotel had closed for the night, with exceptional patience and concern. It is the staff that make any business a success. They succeeded with us.
Southend-on-Sea
Really lovely little apartment in a convenient location near central Southend. The beds are comfy and everything you need to set up a little home-away-from-home is provided. All five of us slept comfortably every night. In a nutshell, much better than paying for multiple hotel rooms! The host, whose name is Zoya, is lovely. Thanks so much, Zoya! We’ll definitely stay here again!
The room and bathroom were very clean, spacious and well furnished. The location was really good, central for Southend and Westcliff-on-Sea, whilst being fairly quiet as it is at the end of a road. Staff all seemed friendly and helpful. We were lucky enough to get one of the few parking spaces in the car park at the rear, as we were visiting off season.
