Cool little town with local amenities near to hand. I didn’t try any of the food outlets as I’d catered for the time away. Local people were polite and helpful. Very nice place to visit with a lot of history. I would return to visit again. Nice place to stop of if you were to attempt the NC500
Wick itself has an amazing history and a visit to the Wick Heritage Centre is a must. Wick is a great place to stay as a base for visiting the orkneys, John O'Groats to name a few places. We ate in a local Cafe called Wickers World which had a great all day breakfast, other than that we self catered but there were plenty of options to eat out if we had wanted to.
We used Wick as our base for traveling around the Highlands doing family research. There is not much in Wick itself, the town is like most small towns these days, with a lot of shops closed. We did find the Heritage centre very interesting, so worth a visit. The locals are very friendly and we had lots of interesting conversations with complete strangers. Wickers World cafe is worth a visit, we had breakfast there it was very good and well priced, the cafe was spotless.
Scotland has many many extraordinary wonderful places but Wick is not one of them. I would not stay or go through Wick again. No disrespect to the people who live there but not for for someone travelling around Scotland to see sights and history.
Smallest street ( Ebenezer Place ) easy to find .Sinclair castle ruins worth a visit and next to that is Noss Lighthouse , free so thats brill. Just before Wick please go and see Whaligoe steps and waterfall.Lovely Davey will tell you all about history .330 steps down to where the fish and whales were brought to the cove and the women carried them up the steps. Waterfall is magnificent ( well 2 waterfalls) .Again free of charge . Just off A99 at Cairn o get .10 minutes from Wick .
If your in this area you definitely need to go see Duncansby Lighthouse, it's breathtakingly beautiful. We also went to the ruins of Sinclair Gringoe which sits upon a cliff, it was a blustery day which added to the mystique of the ruins, well worth the visit. We attempted to visit the ruins of Keiss Castle but it's not easily assessible as there's "private property" signs everywhere. Our main reason for picking this area was it's proximity to Gill's Bay Terminal, we took the 1 hour ferry ride over to Orkney, which by the way is not to be missed.
This was a very last minute booking but the chap who runs the place was extremely hospitable and helpful! The room was spacious and absolutely spotless, very comfortable bed and priced very reasonably compared to everywhere else local. He had even included a booklet of local landmarks and their history which was above and beyond! He also recommended the Indian restaurant next door which we are so glad we listened about, it was delicious and great service too. Very much recommend this place to anyone visiting wick :)
I have been to a lot of hotels in a lot of cities, and i can say that this stay is the one i have enjoyed most in a lot of years. The room is spatious, the beds are nice and the facility's are clean. But what made this stay the most memorable is the hostess. On arrival we got a coffee and were greated with the utmost warmness. I cant quite remember the name of the lady. But in case you're reading this: thanks again for the good care and compassion. There should be more people like you in the world.
Wick
Everything was perfect. We had last-minute dinner at the hotel and it was outstanding. The owners have thought of everything to provide comfort for guests. From the room, to the dining area, to food and breakfast, including friendly touring advice -- it was outstanding. The location is convenient too for NC500 route. It's barely off of the main road (but far enough to be completely quiet) and would be a perfect launch pad for the ferries from Gills Bay to Orkney Isle.
Wick
excellently laid out accommodation, very clean and modern. great location and parking simply at front door. bedrooms were cosy and cleanliness was exceptional throughout the property. everything supplied that any family or individual would need to enhance the stay. Fantastic location to explore Caithness and onwards to Orkney. I have stayed in all the local hotels over many years but from now on this little gem will be our destination if available.
Fantastic property! It actually exceeded our expectation. Clean, warm and nicely decorated house. It has everything we needed. Comfy beds, great kitchen and bathroom, TV, good wifi. Great location, quiet place, easy access, easy to park a car. Keys in the lockbox - very useful if you are not sure what time you may arrive. Very good communication with the host -no problems at all. Definitely on our list, if we will be back to Wick one day.
The Steamboat is in an amazing location with views across Wick Harbour. The flat is spacious but cosy and was immaculate when we arrived. It has everything you would need for a stay on the North East Coast. Parking was right outside the door. The owners provided us with all the information we needed to make our stay enjoyable. I would recommend The Steamboat to anyone looking for a base for touring the North/North-East Coast.
Wonderful place - stayed here with 2 little Kids over Christmas, as I was working nearby. Unlike most holiday homes this felt like a proper home to us, thoughtfully furnished, well equipped and thoroughly cosy. One of the best showers I had in Scotland, and a great kitchen. Great owners, super approachable and just absolutely nice, even put up some Christmas decorations for us. We had a wonderful time here, thank you!
The pods are located not far from Wick where there is plenty of food/drink options. The owner was very welcoming and friendly. The pod was exceptionally clean and had a comfy bed. The private bathroom is in a separate block but very close to the pod and this was very clean. The pod was kitted out with TV and other amenities. Some great views from the pod, especially in the morning.

Lovely stay - Louise was a great host and this was probably our favourite stay of our Scotland trip. Room was exceptionally clean, bed was comfy, room lovely and cosy and everything felt safe under the COVID situation. Also our best breakfast of the trip - Louise went to effort to make me a proper vegetarian breakfast which was much appreciated. Thanks for a great stay!

Wow! Thrumster house is an amazing old house - full of history. Islay and Catherine are fascinating to listen to. We had a wonderful stay, a nice walk round the grounds (history there too) and a really comfy olde world room which was like stepping back in time, plus a wonderful breakfast in a beautiful dining room. Thank you.
The two owners are such lovely people, making their very best in making your stay the very best. The breakfast is really succulent and so worth it, and what a treat to enjoy it watching the ships leaving the harbour in the morning.
