The location is idyllic and just perfect for a calm relaxing vacation. The hosts made us feel so welcome! Home-made food is great. And there is enough to see / to do around at your own pace.

The property was very clean and tidy. The area is quiet and perfect to relax. The hosts were very friendly and helpful.
Calypso Hotel is located just 66 feet from the beach, in Agia Roumeli village. It features rooms with air conditioning and a furnished balcony with Libyan Sea views. The hotel is run by a very charismatic and friendly family. The father saw us coming from the ferry and came down to us to help our 10 year old with her luggage. One of the sons seemed to be running the restaurant and was very personable. the room was clean and felt new. The balcony had a beautiful view. It is across the street from the beach. we were there in early June, and the water was very warm and we saw lots of fish (after buying goggles in town). Everyone in town was friendly and there was never any pressure to buy. We hiked halfway up Samaria Gorge. it was my second time to the gorge and I think the lower portion (accessible from Agia Roumeli) is the best part. I recommend hiking up to the point where the stream disappears. the next day we hiked to Agia Pavlo and back. There is a taverna there, and we had an amazing lentil and garbanzo bean salad. my favorite dish after spending a week in Crete. There is a playground across the street from the hotel, and our 10 year old was befriended by two local girls and they played together for around an hour while was sat on the wrap-around terrace of the hotel.
Located in Arádhaina, within 19 miles of Fortress of Frangokastello, ARADENA TRADITIONAL House 2 offers accommodations with free WiFi, air conditioning and a garden. Everything was thoughtfully taken care of with detail and concerted effort. Instructions were super clear, communication was stellar. Upon arrival we were treated to really the best stocked house I have ever stayed in. The host's recommendations were detailed and excellent, all of them. Really such a treat. We left feeling gratitude and thanks.
Agia Roumeli is a small village, which mainly accommodates those who visit the Samaria Gorge. Access is either by foot from the gorge or by boat from other parts of Sfakia region. It is definitely recommended to stay in Agia Roumeli after visiting the Gorge, as it is a quite demanding hike and some time to rest and relax is much needed. Lots of nice restaurants and cafes to choose from. People are warm and welcoming, and the Agia Roumeli beach is also lovely.
In May, after ferries leave, a very sleepy, romantic place to be in. Next day, while travellers from Samaria arrive, a bit crowdy village :-) The atmosphere is very nice, great to experience, a great spot to stay after your Samaria walk and maybe even a bit longer!
Agia Roumeli offers activities for both sea and mountain lovers, and good, Cretan food based on local products. It should thus be considered as a destination on its own and not just a transfer area after exiting the Samaria Gorge.
Wonderful town, away from the big crowds. Crystal clear blue waters with great swimming and snorkelling possibilities. 2-3 decent restaurants, which in combination with having a small supermarket and our own kitchen was ideal for up to a week. The town is crowded only for a few hours per day when hikers come down from the gorge. Me and my partner immediately felt at home and decided to stay one more night than planned. A lovely little gem that I’d love to visit again.
The beach has black sand, so is too hot to sit on or walk on, and the water is not always clean, depending on the wind direction. Agia Roumeli serves more as an exit or entrance point to Samaria Gorge, which means that most tourists are "one-time" visitors. So related services are overpriced and of poor quality. Which is a pity, because it is a very nice village, that could be worth staying a couple more days.
Samaria Gorge is outstanding as usual, even in late October. It is worthwhile to hike from Agia Roumeli to Agios Pavlos and back. The most beautiful path in Chania, in Crete, in Greece, in Europe, in the world. Friendly people everywhere and amazing sea after the gorge I didnt like I paid for mini bus from Samaria exit to the Agia Roumeli town and there was no receipt. If this business is public, they should include the cost to the Samaria ticket, if is private they should give receipt. People should not feed Kri Kri wild goats.
I loved the location and little beach. It was wonderful to sit out under the trees and drink coffee and eat yogurt with honey in the morning. Beautiful views and great proximity to the Samaria Gorge. We hiked through the gorge with all our stuff to get here...then enjoyed a relaxing 3 night stay. Not fancy but comfortable, with friendly hosts and delicious food!
We got a recently renovated comfortable room for super cheap. The room was just over the owner's minimarket which was really convenient and much quieter than other hotels over restaurants. Agia roumeli is super small so everything was 5 minutes walking max
Wery nice family, we very comfortable. The breakfast was served according to our needs. Beach is beneath the hotel and clean. The room matched our expectations. I hope to visit this hotel again. The water temperature was refreshing.
Love the studio style apartment. The hostess even held our bags after check out so we could continue hiking till the ferry came!!
Great family run hotel with clean & modern rooms, good breakfast, good restaurant and friendly staff.
location!!!! close to edge of beach. we had room on top with our own rooftop balcony - heaven!
