Chania was really just a charming seaside town that felt so much like traveling to anther place AND time for us. We arrived in the Old City at midnight and there were still many bars and restaurants open. We found our way to a lovely little tavern and had a night cap. The next day we woke to the most amazing view overlooking the harbor and then wandered the historic cobblestone streets, artisinal shops, galleries, and had an enormous lunch which was enough for 6 people and we're only 2! We only spent a short time here (1 short night and a full day), and have regretted so much we didn't plan to spend more time in this historic town. I would say 2 nights and 2 full days really is the minimum which should be spent here if at all possible.
Very touristed—even more than I expected for September—but if you wander off the beaten path even a little, you can find wonderful outdoor markets, and quaint places to see. I also recommend taking a village tour outside of Chania, or if you have own car—that’s where the real Greecevis.
Chania is a destination itself, with many different places to see and things to do, such as the Venetian port and the historic old town portion of the city, although we tend to use the city as a base for sightseeing all over the western half of the island. The public bus services to the entire prefecture is excellent, including early am buses to the starting point for the Samaria Gorge, Kissamos for boats to the Balos lagoon, Elafonisi, Paleochora, Chora Sfakia, all the popular local beaches and even many of the lesser traveled places. We've traveled over most of Crete multiple times (six as of this writing) and Chania, with its modern airport as well as the good bus service to other points, makes it our favourite that we continue to return to.
There are many restaurants, cefes & bars you can find all over in Chania town and most of them are really good.. koukouvagia cafe is a very nice place to enjoy the sunset and one of nicest cakes i have ever tried.. there are many nice beaches to visit such as loutraki!
You should definitely visit Samaria gorge. It is an amazing experience. You can walk 18km or you can enter from Agia Roymeli and walk 5km. Parents with children are recommended to enter from agia roumeli.
The old town is full of interesting shops and amazing restaurants! I recommend renting a car (or hiring a driver) to take you to some of the out of the way beaches (which are stunning!!) on the west side of Crete.

Everything was perfect! It’s right in the center of the old town. The room is very comfortable, clean, cozy, and with many nice details. Also, the hotel owner was super nice! She gave me all the best suggestions for sightseeing and restaurant, and we had very interesting conversations. I highly recommend this place. Honestly, you don’t need to look for other hotels no more. You will be taken care of very well. If I go again to Chania, I will definitely stay here again.

Lovely room, very nice decorated. Comfy and modern interior design. Small kitchen with everything you need. Raki 😊 Nice but balcony. Located in the old town of Chania, 1 minute to the Venetian harbour in a lovely little alley. Very good Greek breakfast, downstairs directly in the alley. Warm welcome from Sofia, who manages the accomodation. We directly booked another apartment for the end of our stay in Crete. I highly recommend simply chania 😊

The host Nictaria was a pleasure to meet and made our trip the best we have ever had. Her knowledge of the area, tours and restaurants made it so easy to enjoy as that Chania had to offer. The location is the best in Old Town and when you spend 2 weeks there as we did it is important to be in the middle of sightseeing and restaurants and most important the views from the balcony were fantastic.
