Offering an à la carte restaurant, the stone-built Hotel Gigilos Omalos is located in the village of Omalos. Everything. Beautiful place, lovely friendly people working there - family run business, food is special, it is not fancy restaurant with fancy food, they serve real authentic cretan food made with fresh ingredients. Portions are huge and it's so cheap. In the night absolute silence, so many stars I have never seen in my life and milky way. Amazing. This is not JUST good place if you want to go to Samaria Gorge. We didn't go to Samaria Gorge as we walked trough it 7 yeras ago. We went to Omalos just to enjoy the view and spent one night in mountains away from busy hotel resort. And we loved it. Thank you very much for lovely stay Hotel Gigilos.
Offering a restaurant, the stone-built To Exari is located in Omalos Village. It features heated accommodations with views over the White Mountains. Home cooked food was excellent for both dinner and breakfast. They fixed lunches for us to take on hike down the Samarian Gorge, which is four kilometers away, and provided free transportation the next morning. There were several couples going to the Gorge, and they had everything very well organized.
Located in the plain of Omalos, at 3.4 feet above sea level, the 2-star hotel Neos Omalos features a traditional restaurant, and offers rooms with view of Lefka Ori Mountain. Staying at Neos Omalos is like staying with extended family. They make you feel welcome and are gracious to take care of everyone’s questions and needs. The food in their restaurant is very tasty and filling, again kind of like staying with family. The hotel reminded me of mountain lodges in the US. Not fancy, just comfortable. If you’re going to hike the Samaria Gorge this is a perfect place to stay. They provide shuttle service up to the top of the trail. We stayed 2 nights and took the ferry to Sougia after the hike and the bus from Sougia to Chsnis waits for the ferry and goes through with a stop at Neos Omalos. After a long day of hiking it’s nice to have someone else drive and come back to a warm shower and good supper.
Providing mountain views, Mike Omalos Houses in Omalos provides accommodations, free bikes, a garden and barbecue facilities. Mike welcomes us with local and garden products. We experienced the greek great hospitality. The house is in a very quiet area without any traffic. Nice to watch the nicht sky. Traveling time to Chania or Sougia around 1 hour only. Many thanks for the nice days.
Offering a traditional restaurant and a sun terrace, the family-run Porofarago is located in Sougia, just 98 feet from the entrance to Agia Eirini Gorge. Free WiFi access is available in all areas. Cool location. Great experience. It was like home from home. Amazing spot. We were treated really well.
Located at an altitude of 2001 feet, in Epanochori Village of Crete, the family-run Eriki Studios& Apartments features a traditionally decorated guestrooms with views over the garden or the mountain. Beautiful location up in the mountains with amazing views. Marie-Noelle was the perfect host and was always friendly and helpful and made us feel very welcome.
Omalos was beautiful and had interesting places to hike, which we did not have enough time to do. We stayed at a very nice villa called Omalos Village. We were supposed to stay at a villa associated with Samaria Village, but could not find the villa (and Samaria Village hotel was closed for the season) and received no replies to our pre-trip emails requesting a better map.
Omalos is an ancient plateau in the White Mountains rangs of western Crete. Now as then it is a fertile plain with a later springtime and somewhat lower temperature than the coast resorts - potatoes and other vegetables and fruit find a good environment for growing. Omalos village is small - when the Samaria busses arrive the tiny place is filled with noise and people, and then, just as suddenly it becomes quiet again when they leave. The hotels are run by families, not chains, so there is always a feeling of belonging if one stays a little longer. The mountains are magnificent, forming a backdrop which shifts during the day. Yes, visit Samaria, Gigolos, and the Kallergis Refuge, but take a few days and feel the homely delights and welcoming people of Omalos - and the birdwatching is itself well worth a visit
