Monastery Estate Guesthouse, hotel in Sougia

Built of stone and wood, Monastery Estate is located in the traditional Moni Village of Chania, within 2.8 mi from Sougia Beach.

The location was exceptionally beautiful, peaceful, and immaculately clean. The entire vibe was beyond perfect for the entirety of our five day stay. The staff, Christo, Christo, Georgia and others were beyond description, they contributed greatly to our experience, both in their constant willingness to provide a perfect service as well as in their knowledge of the area, Greek culture, and local things to do. We have already suggested this incredible place to our friends. We could not have had a better experience.

Megim Hotel, hotel in Sougia

Located 328 feet away from Grammeno beach, Megim offers free transportation around the area and free sun beds and umbrellas on the beach.

We liked the fact it was away from the main town and within walking distance to Grammeno Beach which is sandy. The local beach is just a few minutes walk away across the road with a lovely cafe/ staff but it's pebble beach but also beautiful. The water is crystal clear. The breakfast was generous and wonderful and the two ladies who did the breakfast and cleaned our rooms we're so lovely. The garden is beautiful. People took the breakfast out on a tray and sat under the vine. I enjoyed watching the goats on the rocks behind the house. There are quite a few restaurants to eat in nearby within walking distance if you didn't fancy driving into Paleochora town including one in the campsite which is nearby.

Sougia is a lovely, small resort but has plenty of places to eat and drink, but not much else. It is perfect for sun-worshippers and those who prefer a quieter holiday (though there are a couple of music bars). It's great if you are with friends as I was, especially if you have access to a car, though some of the roads are a bit of an adventure. It's not ideal for families as the beach is steep at the waterline so unsafe for those who are not good swimmers. There are busses and water taxis to other places but land travel always means going up a mountain and back down again. Plenty of walks in the area, but the heat and terrain make them challenging. Well suited to "serious" walkers. The sea was wonderful, clear, warm enough and uncrowded.

A very scenic drive from Chania, especially via the Omalas route, (slightly longer but worth it). The town is tiny. 200 or so residents, but still manages some excellent restaurants. There is good walking, particularly the popular trail - one and half hours - westwards to the archaeological site at Lissos. Alternatively, one can arrange a boat to Lissos, for a few euros, either one way or return. At 0830 a longer boat ride can be arranged eastwards along the scenic south coast. Evening beach walks at Sougia are also nice. For a more strenuous trek one might wish to visit the Agia Irini Gorge. The entrance is signposted directly next to the road 4.5km north of Sougia, with parking. It is far less crowned than neighbouring Samaria. Some 7km long it takes about three hours to walk.

It was very quiet as it is November, so end of the tourist season, but nice. The weather is still perfectly fine to go to the beach, there are still some restaurants and bars open. It's a nice little quiet place to go hike or stay on the beach without the crowds of Chania or Heraklion.

Sougia is a small village at the mouth of Agia Irini gorge, approximately 1.5hrs drive from Chania airport (we rented a car) It has a couple of mini markets and a couple of gift shops but the main street hosts mainly tavernas. The beach is a pebble beach with crystal clear water. You have access to bus, ferry and taxi services allowing you to explore the surrounding area. We have stayed in Sougia 4 times and we love the tranquility and beautiful mountainscape.

Very relaxing, chilled, and out of the way of the city hustle. Quite the feeling of hippie lifestyle, with relaxed attitude towards nudists. The beach has both areas for people who enjoy to swim with swimwear, and without. There are several tents around the far end of the beach, and the atmosphere in bars and restaurants is relaxed. Great place for walkers as well as those who just want to enjoy the peace and quiet. Daily ferry service, and one bus service. I stayed in Lissos rooms which was lovely and quiet, and ate in Livikon which had excellent grilled king prawns, and the fabulous lamb and beans dish

    What a place.

What a place. Only one hour walk (or 7 minute taxi ride costing only 10 euro) to reach Sougia from the monastery estate guesthouse. Locals were friendly and took the time to chat to you about your travel plans / share local knowledge. The food in every taverna we ate in was high quality fresh local produce and the prices very reasonable. Could pass an entire day on the sunloungers, listening to the sea then going for some Greek food, then watching sunset. Also Lissos is nearby - we didn't manage to visit but we took a boat trip to palaiochora beach which was lovely. Didn't beat Sougia though!

Couple who ran the hotel are really nice and helpful. Cleaning is excellent and prompt. Some nice views of the mountains we drove down to get to Sougia. For a 3 star hotel this does almost everything it should. The town is awesome. Really secluded and laid back, the undeveloped nature of the town is great to see. The beach is very nice but it is large rocks so you need water shoes. Walk to far left of the beach and you’ll find a secluded cove that is really nice (it’s clothing optional).

Splendid quiet location, you are both in the mountains and also just a short ride away from the beach. Lots of hiking opportunities nearby. And a warm welcome of the hostess Wanda, who delivers a better service than if you were staying in a real hotel :-)
