Flores is a charming little town with lots of little cafes and restaurants. There aren't really many tourist attractions in Flores itself, but it is scenic and a great place to relax and walk around.
Flores is a great place to stay for visiting Tikal. You can arrange a inexpensive turist bus to and from Flores. A word of caution when flying from Guatemala city - travel lite as Guatemala airlines will charge you $1 for each pound your suitcase weighs!
Flores is a small but lovely island. If you are looking for a short but sweet weekend getaway. This is an ideal place- it is affordable if you look for the right places and the island of Flores is not large- so you literally walk everywhere or take a Tuk Tuk which are very popular there. You will experience a lot of the Guatemalan culture, language and colors. explore and have fun!!
We arrived by shuttle bus and was greeted by a local who gave us some very helpful information -free of charge-as to where our hotel was,how much to pay for a tuk - tuk etc .Easy to get around Flores by foot. A thousand photo opportunities!Locals are so friendly. Beautiful place to stay!
We know many people stay in Flores as a base for visiting Tikal, an hour or so away. We chose to stay on the premises of Tikal, and to stay in Flores separately. Both were quite enjoyable. I'm not sure I'd recommend staying a full three days in Flores in addition to Tikal, but we are glad we stayed in both.
Flores is beautiful and colorful, clean, personable. I felt safe and like the amount of goodness there was such a great value for what I paid. Boat trips with private guides are the best. Just ask your hotel to call you a boat. Then the Boatman- ask for Carlos from San Miguel- will come and grab u from your bar or restaurant where you are waiting. You can tour around Lake Peten Itza for a few hours to El Mirador or the wildlife sanctuary or a bar/restaurant for about $40 plus tip. Awesome.
Pontoon restaurant with lakeside views across to Flores. Right next to the supermarket. Easy to walk across the bridge to Flores in 5 to 10 minutes. No hassle of being over touristed in Flores. Feels more local here in St Elena. 5 mins from airport. Ecofiltro water so don’t have to buy plastic bottles. Great food in the restaurant. Incredible bird life in the lovely garden. AC in the rooms. Wifi in reception but my tip is to buy a Guatemala SIM (called a chip here) from Tigo who have excellent coverage round here.
Great location, magnificent hotel and wonderful staff. Can’t really think of something negative to say. There is a free monkey boat tour in the morning, there are free kayaks to use on the beautiful lake and the breakfast is just delicious. Special thanks to Carlos, Elmer and Grecia for the great service
