There's one great place to visit and that is The Store Yard. A quirky salvage come antique shop that has won awards and which has a restaurant in the centre. And in the most unlikely building too! Very deceptive from outside. The Rock of Dunamase is an easy 10 minute drive away and has spectacular views as well as history. I've passed by here many times and never noticed it before until I had the time to stay nearby.
I didn't realize it was a pretty big city--and I found myself driving at rush hour more than once. But I finally got the main streets down, and had no more problems navigating. Many fabulous ruins and castles nearby, lots of day driving trips to take using Portlaoise as a hub. Enjoyed my stay, loved the hotel I chose--Portlaoise Heritage Hotel.
We ate in the Pantry for Breakfast and found the staff and the Food excellent. Would definitely recommend. Lovely surroundings. Then we headed to a Shop called Nook and Cranny where we met a lovely lady who was very friendly and a pleasure to deal with. The shop is fab and has a wide assortment of goods. A must if you are looking for something different or some candles. Portlaoise is easy to get around on foot and the people are lovely and very friendly. We met a lady who stopped us on the street one evening when we were looking a bit lost and pointed out all the places that would be suitable to eat. We ate in the Italian restaurant attached to the Portlaoise Heritage hotel. Food was supper and staff were 1st Class. Would highly recommend. We stayed in the Portlaoise Heritage Hotel which I would highly recommend. Serivce,Staff and Cleanliness were 100%. Will definitely return
I would never stay there again. My room was not cleaned properly. I found remains from the last guest in the bath and bed. I brought it to the receptionists attention and her reaction was ..'Oh the cleaner didn't do her job properly'.....I was there for business with Musgraves and had to stay for two nights. The toilets on the first day were a total disgrace and on the third day were equally as bad. I have photos but do not want to share unless asked for.

The breakfast is fantastic, the best i've had in Ireland since I returned. I was made to feel very welcome and having not been to Portlaoise in many years, it felt like home again. The rooms are very elegant and the hospitality I received was second to none. Highly recommend.

Nice hotel, friendly staff, very clean. Stayed during renovations which brings the score down. Not brilliant value, food pricey. But that's Ireland for you.
