Catania was... interesting. There were many ancient buildings and sites to explore and the food was great everywhere we went. At first we were concerned about the general cleanliness and graffiti but the area grew on us and we never felt unsafe even at night. Speaking of Catania at night, be aware of the afternoon siesta. Most restaurants close at 1 PM and don't open until 7 or 8 PM. If you want a late lunch or early dinner you will be out of luck so plan accordingly. We rented a car and driving was an experience. If you like aggressive city driving you will feel right at home! But we never felt unsafe on the road. The local drivers expected you to fill in the gaps and gave you the space you needed, just be quick about it. If you are a nervous driver and need lots of room to feel comfortable you may want to take a cab or uber.

A city spoiled by graffiti and surly and inhospitable local people which I found rude in the extreme
The Sicilians have weaponised vehicles of all types to ensure pedestrians feel under threat at all times.
The food and markets were brilliant

It is a real city, with real people, despite the tourists.
It is a real city, with real people, despite the tourists. It was possible to experience the reality of Sicilian life without the pandering to tourist demands for fast food and "Watney's Red Barrel". So much to do and see and a cultural vitality that seemed to have a surprise waiting around the corner.
The Caravaggio exhibition was excellent and we lost all sense of time when we immersed ourselves in the Cinema Museum in ZO.

A city worth visiting.
A city worth visiting. There are restaurants with delicious food, though they can be quite pricey. It's fairly noisy at night, and public transportation can be challenging, with frequent delays.
The city boasts many great spots, numerous museums, and exhibitions. I had the chance to attend a Caravaggio painting exhibition. The city's black sand beach is simply magnificent.

Do your research, Catania is dirty by British Standards but the city really does have a unique charm. Etna was amazing but we also found so much to do in and around the city. Despite reading other reviews we never felt unsafe and loved the craziness of the city. The attractions are great, something for everyone and all easily walkable. Plenty of restaurants and bars and prices were good. Go to the Be Quiet restaurant ( off Main Street) food was amazing. Make sure you take a copy of your passport on your phone - it’s the law in Italy, we didn’t and got stopped by police on the train to Syracuse. Glad we visited Catania

A city with a lot to offer but in a very poor state of repair. The amount of graffiti on every building and amount of rubbish on every street corner did not give a very good impression. Catania is best seen at night when neither the graffiti or the rubbish are so visible and the incredible night life takes over.
This is by far the dirtiest city I’ve visited and I have travelled to many poor countries throughout the world including Africa and South America and still Catania beats them all.
My wife and I had to stay in Sicily for an extra day because our flight got canceled. The airline didn't help us out with a hotel room, so we had to scramble and find a hotel close to the airport. We were pretty stressed and tired, but we lucked out when we found this gem of a hotel. Even though we rolled in super late, they treated us so well that we completely forgot about our flight hassles. I'd totally tell anyone to stay there!
This is the place to stay in Catania. Part hotel, part art gallery, it is hard to explain it but at every turn there is something else to see and admire. We had two rooms and both were wonderful, with comfy beds, which wasn't often the case in our month long travels within Italy.
They also provided an excellent breakfast, set in either the wonderful breakfast room or the terrace.
We'd definitely go back!
The apartment is in the very center of the city. Extremely clean, comfortable and functional accommodation. Towels are changed daily. The hotel organizes taxi transport from the airport. An extremely kind driver, I would say a friend of the hotel owner, explained to us what to see, visit, where the good restaurants are. Everything was great. Warm recommendation to everyone who wants to visit Catania.
Me and my family enjoyed the stay at Solsicily. The apartment was clean. we had a large room with a private bathroom, which was fully equipped. the biggest thanks to Mr. Christian for his willingness. He advised us the best places in and around Catania and helped us arrange our early departure by taxi to the airport (€22). Thank you and highly recommend.
Very clean, great breakfast, friendly staff, location is great if you plan whole day trips around Sicily with return to Catania as the train and coach station is right by the hotel. And I also have to mention Danilo... very helpful and kind.
