Hugging the Ligurian coastline, Genoa boasts Europe’s largest old town and Italy’s largest seaport. As birthplace of Christopher Columbus, its heart and soul is the port, site of the Naval Museum and the ship-shaped Aquarium.
By the old port (Porto Antico) are several bars and restaurants serving the local speciality – pesto. Other Genoese favourites are focaccia and fresh fish from its Mediterranean shores. Don’t miss the homemade gelato ice cream along the seafront promenade – Corso Italia. East of here is the tranquil Boccadasse neighbourhood, where colourful boats bob up and down.
The best city views are from Villetta di Negro, a raised, shady park with a waterfall. Below is UNESCO World Heritage-listed Via Garibaldi, home to the ornately decorated Palazzo dei Rolli.
South is the old town with its black-and-white cathedral and Piazza de Ferrari, featuring a large fountain and historic buildings including the Doge’s Palace. The surrounding area is a maze of narrow, cobbled streets flying the Genoa flag, supposedly where the English took theirs from. Each features bars, restaurants and unique shops, while fancy boutiques are on Via XX Settembre.
As you approach Genova Airport look out for the fortresses on the lush hills forming the backbone of the ‘Superb City’. Booking.com has a range of Genoa accommodation, from hotels to apartments and B&Bs.
I really liked it. Very beautiful terrace (these are 2 terraces) and a beautiful view of Genova. Lemon trees and roses grow on the terrace. The apartment is located in the very middle of the old town. I enjoyed every moment. I got up early in the morning so I could sit on the terrace with a mug of coffee and take a picture of the beautiful views of Genoa,
Irene had bought food for our breakfast, it was very nice.
I definitely recommend staying in this apartment if travelers want to enjoy real Genoese moods.

It is a typical port city with its all beauty.
It is a typical port city with its all beauty. Genoa has a historical part which is really nice to visit and enjoy. Genoa has an excellent running path (cca. 2,5 km long) directly at coast. During our 4 nights stay 2 times there were a concert at the nearby square. (windows of Hotel are well insulated :-)) In the narrow old streets there are many authenticate restaurant. Nice boat trip starts from the port. The port is very busy for big tourist ships as well.

Genova was a very dirty city.
Genova was a very dirty city. Urination and trash everywhere. Our best time in Genova was taking the ferry to San Fruttossa and Portofino. The beach in San Fruttossa was beautiful- pack a lunch as food and drink are limited there- and snorkelling is available right off the beach. In Genova, Cavour Moda 21 was a real treasure with great prices and food portions that cant be beat.

We loved Génoa as it is close to Portofino and Cinque Terre and has one of the best aquariums in the world. It has port and marina precinct is beautiful and has lots of trendy restaurants, cafes and Gelato shops. Old town has its charm and many historical and beautiful marble buildings and churches. One of the disadvantage if you are driving is it is car free and reaching your apartment can be difficult especially with large luggage. Also, as with any old towns, old drainage system can have its drawback as well. In any case, we had a lovely time in Génoa. We absolutely loved Portofino, only 45 minutes boat ride from Génoa and it is reasonably priced. We didn’t have enough time to visit Cinque Terre, therefore, at least allow 5 days if you want to explore the area well. Génoa is only 2 hours drive from Tower of Pisa, which worked out well for us.

Lots of historical things to see and not so many tourists as in e.g. Florence and Venice. Great restaurants, cafes and shops. Aquarium I didn’t or wouldn’t visit (don’t agree with animal captivity for tourist attraction).
Great location - in the center of everything, all destinations reachable by feet (Porto Antico, Acquario, Palazzo Ducale, etc.). Great english speaking and very helpful staff, super breakfast and service, with the amazing view to the yacht port. Rooms and all hotel super clean. Exterior doesn't reveal this, but interior of the hotel is stylish - kinda being on the real ship. Very kids friendly (what in Italy is not as usual).
Great location, nice staff and affordable prices! the bed was SO comfortable! The building where the hotel is located was pretty cool too, with a majestic staircase and awesome architecture. Supermarket and restaurants nearby, as well as train and bus station. A great place for a nights rest before travelling elsewhere in Italy.
Amazingly good local food. We spent 10 days travelling round Italy, and had some of the best food of our holiday here at the Holiday Inn in Genoa. The Genoise pasta and cakes were amazing.
The location is also great for access to the Port.
Breakfast was generous, the hotel was incredibly close to the train station where we arrived from southern Italy. The rooms seemed to have been recently refurbished, and were more modern than I expected.
Hotel is located in a quiet location with parking on the street which is free from 8pm till 8am. Hotel manager is very kind and eager to help. Rooms were clean and cozy.
