BelgiumThe Villa has just few rooms, so it feels cozy. Hospitality has been great. You can get lots of useful advice the owners at any moment. The owner also helped me with parking, which is not easy (esp. if you come in a bigger /longer car). Parking garage in the end is a place is of a proper size, yet the narrow access with 90 degrees turn may not be easy (parking on the street is possible, too, although it the road is steep and not particularly wide). Breakfast was really nice with a nice selection homemade cakes and other food. The Villa is located on a private street with a code, so the traffic is minimal. It is quiet. On the other hand, it is only 10 minutes walk to the train station and the seaside promenade (and another 15 min. to the port where you can find many local restaurants (can get very busy especially during weekends; if you can, book your table in advance). It is also only few steps to a local supermarket. The rooms are spacious with well functioning air conditioning and are comfortable. Overall, good location for a trip to other picturesque ligurian small towns and villages on the cost including Portofino, which is even nicer if you decide to get there by train and boat.

Ship Shape and Fancy Free
Hugging the Ligurian coastline, Genoa boasts Europe’s largest old town and Italy’s largest seaport. As birthplace of Christopher Columbus, its heart and soul is the port, site of the Naval Museum and the ship-shaped Aquarium.
By the old port (Porto Antico) are several bars and restaurants serving the local speciality – pesto. Other Genoese favourites are focaccia and fresh fish from its Mediterranean shores. Don’t miss the homemade gelato ice cream along the seafront promenade – Corso Italia. East of here is the tranquil Boccadasse neighbourhood, where colourful boats bob up and down.
The best city views are from Villetta di Negro, a raised, shady park with a waterfall. Below is UNESCO World Heritage-listed Via Garibaldi, home to the ornately decorated Palazzo dei Rolli.
South is the old town with its black-and-white cathedral and Piazza de Ferrari, featuring a large fountain and historic buildings including the Doge’s Palace. The surrounding area is a maze of narrow, cobbled streets flying the Genoa flag, supposedly where the English took theirs from. Each features bars, restaurants and unique shops, while fancy boutiques are on Via XX Settembre.

We liked Genova only for a short walking tour to Porta...
We liked Genova only for a short walking tour to Porta Soprana, Piazza de Ferrari, Genoa cathedral (Cathedrali di San Lorenzo), and House of Christopher Columbus. Compared to Rome, this city wasn't what we expected. We chose this city to go to Portofino by boat which was very much worth it.
There's Genova Aquarium which is nice for families. Next to the Train station (Piazza Principe) is a nice restaurant called HB cafe with delicious food and ice cream. We liked it very much.

We like visiting the historic buildings and churches which...
We like visiting the historic buildings and churches which abound in Genoa much of which has remained little changed since the 15th/16th century and is now encircled by 19th century property. Many of the places of tourist interest are in the pedestrianised area. We found it worth thinking about the shape of the town (basically a cup shape around the harbour) in planning our visits as by the end of the day some of the cobbled streets/alleyways seemed to get steeper! Opening time information on listings was sometimes inconsistent (it was a national holiday weekend) but the websites of the main attractions were accurate. Information for smaller churches was often wrong but the town is compact and it was fairly easy to get access eventually by trying doors were each time we passed.

Do your research before you visit ,so you know which attractions and restaurants you would like to visit , there are a lot in the immediate area of the hotel, you are spoiled for choice.
We were joining a cruise , so we picked the hotel for its proximity to the MSC terminal although the Holiday Inn is very close to the cruise terminal, if you just staying overnight but not in a very good position for looking around and not as nice as NH Collection.

It is a port town.
It is a port town. Very crowded and not so easy to walk around. However it is worthy to see it once. Narrow streets and nice restaurants. Great views from upper town if you can find a good spot. Aquarium is nice, could be a little cheaper. Be careful for street sellers. Don't take any items from them.
Many good paid parking places around.

Genova is a beautiful city, less tourists than other big items. Old town, churches, historic alley ways are all there. Don't miss out on the Royal Palase and others. Boccadessa is a must! There's excellent train routes to Cinque Terre and Portofino. The whole train ride is so picturesque with the little fishing villages! This is the Italian Riviera!!! Home of the pesto and focaccia!!

Honestly, I was expecting Genoa to be gritty (like Toulon, another port city on the Med), which is another way of saying shabby and dangerous at night. It was not. It was really nice. Plenty of interesting restaurants. Lively center. Generally, a great place to spend the day. Wife and I only spent one, which seemed enough, but two would probably have been better. For the cyclists in the crowd, the hills around the city are great. Just steep enough, not too much. Decent surfaces. Entertaining hairpins. Practically no traffic. The problem is getting there. As with every European city (outside the Netherlands and parts of Germany), bike lanes are a painted‑on extra parking spot for double‑parked taxis and delivery vans joke. As an added bonus, Genoa’s bike lanes are full of scooters, which is great if you love the smell of two‑stroke oil. And they’re rough enough to make my carbon rims cry for their mommy (fortunately, I brought my gravel bike with old‑school alu rims that take a licking and keep on ticking). BTW, the beach scene is pretty much the same as all Italy. Nasty, dirty, garbage‑strewn public beaches and umbrella‑farm private beaches. Not worth the hassle, unless you like hassle.

Our host was very communicative and prepared us well to check in. Once checked in, the flat was gorgeous, whimsical, and full of character. It also had the best amenities of my whole stay in Italy (coffee, tea, etc). We really enjoyed watching Italian shows on the flat's netflix too :) Whether you are staying in Genova for just a night as we were, or whether you are looking to base yourself there for a longer stay, I would strongly recommend the very comfortable Meizon Genova :)

The company handling this rental was able to switch us to another apartment in another neighborhood after we contacted them and explained the problem including to show proof with photographs. They were really fair with us and I am sure this was an exceptional situation that we were lucky they were able to solve. Thank you Wonderful Italy! The location of the apartment was a positive since old town is a fun place to be in general.

Upgraded to Grand Hotel Savoia (I think the continental is closed during off season, it looked closed from the outside).
Grand hotel is a beautiful 5 star hotel next door with old school charm. Lovely ambience, kind staff, huge stylish room, beautiful and clean. An excellent base to explore stunning Genoa. The breakfast was delicious with a good selection.
It felt like incredible value for money due to the upgrade.
