FAQs about hotels in Liguria

A Spectacular Sea of Colour

Although one of Italy’s smallest regions, Liguria punches well above its weight for incredible scenery. Its coastline stretching from the French border to the port of La Spezia is lined with brightly coloured houses, including those spectacularly hugging cliffs in the Cinque Terre villages.

Equally impressive is Portofino harbour, one of the most beautiful in Italy. In a country that counts Venice, Sorrento and Capri amongst its harbour towns, that’s quite some accolade. Next door Rapallo has a long promenade watched over by a castle.

Levanto’s promenade is supported by pillars on the beach below and overlooks mountains descending into the Mediterranean Sea. Portovenere at the tip of a peninsula has a Gothic church on a rocky outcrop.

The Liguria capital is Genoa, Italy’s busiest port and home to one of Europe’s largest Old Towns. Varazze to the west has a sweeping beach, as does Alassio – 2 resorts with lots of Liguria hotels on the beach on Booking.com. A fortress guards the entrance to Savona harbour, while Albenga has medieval spires and cobbled streets.

Low hills are the backdrop to Imperia’s beach and neighbouring Diano Marina is lapped by turquoise waters. When thinking of Liguria hotels, luxury springs to mind and nowhere is this truer than in exclusive Sanremo, home to an annual music festival and glamorous casino.

Proximity to beach and town, the fact that it had a rooftop with swimming pool, terraces and different comfortable lounges I never had in any hotels such a large variety of food and cakes for breakfast No need to have lunch or diner in another place, their offer for 35€ exkl drinks is excellent After checking out, we spent a day at their beach and before driving back home, we could have a shower and get clean , the hotel keeps an extra bathroom for guests who don't have a room

I wasn't impressed with the bathroom.

I wasn't impressed with the bathroom. Allocating a shower in a bath to two senior citizens was not ideal. Good job I am a fit 82 year old otherwise I wouldn't have been able to climb into the shower! Also having a towel rack inside the shower cubicle was rather odd.

If one is going to La Spezia one must see Cinque Terre. Taking the ferry to each town without getting off and a Viator train tour the next day was the way I saw Cinque Terre, each trip 6 to 8 hours. Additionally, La Spezia itself has much to offer in the way of good food, a great area to walk along the harbor and a wonderful uncrowded atmosphere. Two photos from Cinque Terra; Vernazza and Riomaggore.

When traveling to Cinque Terra, you need to decide whether to stay in one of the 5 towns or the bigger towns - La Speiza or Levanto. I would recommend one of the 5 towns. Of the 5 towns Monterosso has the easiest access. Monterosso is the only village with the extreme ease of access from the train station to the hotel. In addition, Monterosso has the easiest access to public beaches.

It is accessible by train from Genoa and from the south. It acts as the gateway to Portofino, which means that it can get quite crowded. The pedestrianised area of town away from the sea front is delightful. A good spot for a beach holiday as well as for a short break. the railway means that you can easilt explore Genoa to the north or Pisa and the Cinque Terre to the south.

Vernazza was our favourite of the 5 villages.

Vernazza was our favourite of the 5 villages. It is very busy with tourists during the day, but everyone leaves in the evening, so you can enjoy the whole town to yourself at this time. There were some very authentic places to eat with beautiful scenery of the harbour. It is a convenient location for hikes as you can access Corniglia and Monte Rosso on both sides. It’s a small village and we thought 4 nights was about right to explore Vernazza and surrounding villages. We met some locals as well who were friendly and good fun. It is easy to get around Vernazza, however there are a lot of steps up to places which may be difficult for some. Recommend Cinque Sensi (quieter spot) for the best foccace, prosecco and pesto classes.
