I had to skip some of the things I wanted to do because how late in the season and the non stop torrential downpours. There really isn’t as much to see/do like in a big city, but the architecture and history are worth the time.
A pretty and friendly place to stay, with very friendly people and a good range of top value eating places and watering holes. Clise to Venice and with it’s own outlet village, I would highly recommend Palmanova - it’s a hidden gem.
Palmanova is a fort built by the Venetians to defend their territory from the Turks and the Hapsburgs. Its the prototype for most fortified European towns. Itsa nine pointed star with three beautiful, imaginative Venetian gates which are tinyand you have toduck through on foot, between cars queuing to get in. There is a huge parade ground in the centre, and several lovely wals around the walls which are overgrown with figs, flowering shrubs and trees. The cafes and food is great. Its small, sweet and relaxed, children play in the square and it feels like another nicer world. Ona hot day it all looks so like a painting by Giorgio de Chirico
A real gem. Interesting history and a beautiful starshaped town. Quite rightly a UNESCO world heritage site. The city walls take your breath away. Nice restaurants with great Friulano food. Try the Caffeteria Torinese in the main square.
A small historical city with the most unique urbanism that is still here to stay for us to admire. We ate in a small pizza place near the centre. The food was great at a reasonable price. A great running/walking road for recreation around the wall of a city. Peaceful without cars, with marks to leed you (4-6km).
Palmanova is in great spot to spend a night or 2. City is really small with great atmosphere. I was very suprised by it since i booked the accomodation due to close proximity to main higway. Definitly worth spending time here. Also in decent spot to be a "base" for trips to both North Italy and Slovenia.
