Vernazza is beautiful - but tourism has turned it into a commercial nightmare, especially during high season. Packed boats, trains, and walkers are arriving in a constant stream so that restaurants were full, the small beach was over-crowded, and the whole place was so heaving with people that you have to walk sideways most of the time, and the shops just sold tourist tat. If you are expecting a quiet picturesque little fishing village with residents going about their daily lives then you might have better luck going in January.
If you have the time, spend a minimum of two nights in Vernazza or one other Cinque Terre village. By staying in place you can enjoy quiet mornings and evenings in your own village and join the crush of tourists in another one or two in the mid day, or get on a boat and enjoy it from the water or take a hike if it’s not too hot. I was skeptic so about CT since it’s so crowded but we did drive there and park in a reserved lot outside of Vernazza village which was easy enough to arrange and the shuttle service was free. The roads are narrow and twisty but my husband managed fine in a Volkswagen T Cross. The train between villages was sometimes delayed but nice and easy ish. Just be sure to validate your tickets before boarding. The water in July was perfect. The clearest. Calm. Snorkeling was amazing. Morning and evening dips to cool down. It is really pretty. We were staying regional this trip but will do other coastal areas other trips. Amalfi Coast appears much nicer and more resort-y but we were in Tuscany for a wedding (amazing) so we did the CT. Genoa and the rest of the Ligurian Coast is surely also nice and possibly quieter during the day, but we really enjoyed it in the off hours.
Vernazza is a great base for exploring the Cinque Terre. We visited the other villages but decided we had made the best choice of Vernazza due to the harbour, the beach, the views and the proximity to the train station. While very busy during the day, at night it became comfortably vibrant, with plenty of restaurants, bars and gelateria open to satisfy all tastes. It's a gorgeous little town - the gem of Cinque Terre!
We wanted to stay at different locations of the cinque terre so we chose To stay for 2 days in Monterosso then Vernazza. Monterosso was bigger than Vernazza with more restaurants and beaches, and Vernazza was god to visit for 1 day I would say as the beaches are smaller than Monterosso’s and we preferred the Monterosso beaches . For futur self, I recommend to only stay at 1 terre and every other day visit the other ones as they are very close. For me I preferred Monterosso for a stay and the other ones for visits.
Picture-perfect charming sea-side town. Glad we stayed two nights in Vernazza and explored the nearby towns of Corniglia, Manarola and Monterossa during our trip. Everything we had dreamed and hoped for, in the Cinque Terre.
Cinque Terre is postcard Italy - each of the five towns are so charming and definitely worth a visit! Trains run between each town all day/night and you can get a Cinque terre travel card allowing for unlimited train trips or hikes between each one! Definitely hike between the towns if you're able (each hike is about an 1 - 2hr long) as the panoramic views on the way are incredible! Vernazza is the perfect base for exploring Cinque terre - it's in the middle of all five and has a nice harbour/beach, loads of restaurants and shops and some great viewpoints for sunset so perfect for staying in with things to do during the day/night while exploring the other villages/area and is a lot cheaper than staying in Monterosso. There aren't many/any hostels or hotels in Cinque Terre but there are lots of apartments/Airbnbs options! We stayed two and half days in Vernazza and saw each village but would recommend staying slightly longer (3-5 days would be perfect) to fit in more hikes/water activities/relaxation!
Loved sleeping to the sound of the crushing waves of the sea. This was definitely the highlight, being able to keep the window open and hear the sea. Vernazza is the better place to stay relative to the other Cinque Terre villages, it retains more of the genuine village feel compared to the others. The hosts were so kind to recommend the Monterosso hiking trail which was the highlight of our Cinque Terre experience, absolutely amazing! The room was clean and comfortable with a touch of modern design. The hosts were super helpful and kind.
Vernazza
The location is extremely convenient to town and the train station. The view is fantastic and each room has its own balcony. The ladies that run Casa Cato could not have been more gracious and helpful! They offered lots of advice for visiting all the towns of the Cinque Terre, assistance with porter to help with luggage, apps to put on phone for CT places, etc. Breakfast is typically Italian with fresh pastries, fresh made coffee and cappuccino, fruit juices, etc. The hospitality here is wonderful!
Vernazza
This place is by far the best apartment we stayed in Italy. Beautiful place!! Very clean, well equipped, and well located just in the heart of Vernazza. Alice was one great host! She prepared everything accordingly to cater a family with 3 kids. Even went out of her way to gave the kids some welcoming sweets, and a souvenir for us. Thank you Alice, your simple gesture is greatly appreciated! Excellent in all aspects!
Vernazza
Excellent staff, the lady was fast in responding to messages and very kind. Room was fine, clean and nicely decorated. The place is a bit offside, we used it as a base for starting our race bike cycling tours along the Cinque Terre roads. The path to get to the house is a bit steep, narrow and bumpy but we easily made it with a VW T5. Parking space is big enough. Nice breakfast as well - especially the coffee.
Vernazza
The location is excellent if you intend to visit Cinque Terre, The hotel is located on the main road but is extremely quiet. The view from our room was stunning. Alessandra was very helpful and easy to communicate with. There is a small café right at the entrance of the hotel, ideal for coffee and breakfast. They serve an excellent apple pie and pancakes.
Our host was the nicest, friendly, host I have ever had. He met us in Corniglia's town square where we were able to offload our luggage and park the car. He then guided us to where we were going to stay telling us about the history of Cinque Terre and his own rich heritage. We had an amazing time largely in part to his hospitality.
Vernazza
The location is perfectly placed on Via Roma (the main street), equidistant from the train station and the harbor. It has a nice balcony that overlooks the street with a table and chairs. Very spacious and very functional - perfect for trip exploring Cinque Terre!
