Located in the mountain ranges of Hakone in the Sengokuhara Hot Springs region, HAKONE RETREAT FÖRE by Onko Chishin is a 50-minute bus ride from Odawara Station. The hotel is a short walk away from the main road. Staff patiently waited for me to check-in (I only managed to reach the property by 4 pm by bus and was the last guest in). Design of the property was excellent and so was the Room. Dinner was fantastic (not a surprise in Japan) but relatively pricey. I didn't get the breakfast option - but the coffee bar opens quite early and has decent breads. Good for a short 1-2 days break. The hotel offers bicycle rentals by the way.

Overall very pleasant trip which we enjoyed, but it can get very crowded on friday and while the ship, trains and cable cars were reliable and we always got in, when we tried to get from Motohakone to Tonosawa, the buses were crowded and we waited more than hour to get to the bus. There is lots of tourist attractions, museums, hiking paths etc., we bought the Hakone freepass from Odawara and it was very convenient. We kept our suicases in the baggage storage in Odawara and travelled only with our backpacks, which made the travelling very convenient. Keep an eye on the closing time of the ship and cable cars.
Lots of museums in the area. There are buses, trains, cable cars, and gondolas used as transportation, so lots of variety and options for getting around. Food options close very early in the evening, so be sure to eat by around 5pm. The pirate ship is worth the ride even without the Hakone freepass, but I don't think the upgrade to first class is necessary.
Hakone is a beautiful place to get away from the hustle and bustle of Japanese cities. The perfect place to reconnect with nature. The lake is really nice and there are both boat rides and canoe services available. Plenty of gardens and nature walks to go on. A volcano you can go up and a scenic train you can relax on. The town areas are also nice with plenty of yummy food available and kind locals. There are also a few museums/galleries you can visit. I especially liked the Open Air Museum. Getting around Hakone is not as easy as the cities since you'll have to take the bus as your primary mode of transport but, as is normal in Japan, they are plenty and timely. I highly recommend getting your hands on the Hakone Pass as it saves you a lot of money. I also recommend using a luggage forwarding service to get your bags to your hotel or onsen. This will save you the struggle on the bus, you'll definitely thank yourself later as you sit on a packed bus going around 45 degree corners at 40ks and hour 🤣
Hakone is perfect for experiencing traditional Ryokan and Onsen and is one of the best places for views of Mount Fuji. The Hakone Freepass provides unlimited travel on train, ropeway and pirate ship cruise on lake Ashi, as well as some buses, but needs to be purchased from Hakone-Yumoto station. Well worth visiting, with many options for sightseeing including a Picasso exhibition at the Hakone Open Air museum.
Relaxing place just half an hour outside of Tokyo. The nature is beautiful and so unique with the maple trees and lake Ashi. Did the ropeway all the way to the top and tried the black eggs. You can also leave the luggage at the hakone station for the day. Definitely a must visit when in Japan. Small tip- whenever you see a souvenir or something you want to try- go for it straight away as some things are unique and you will not be able to buy elsewhere.
Onset was our favorite place. Plenty of places to get food and drinks. When we were there the rope ride was suspended and created long lineups for the bus. Seamed as they were cought of guard and a bit unorganized thus waisted two hours waiting for the bus until we figured out to change our rute. Buses are slow and next time I would rather pay for a taxi than waiting for the buses. The hakone pass did not serve us well.
Hakone
Spouse & I had room with view of lovely river & small waterfall. Ryokan is only 4 streets from train station including slight hill. Many, many restaurants & gift stores right around the corner. Yet, location of hotel feels private & serene. Enjoyed private onsen and absolutely delicious multi-course dinner & breakfast. Staff, especially Arunita, were kind, attentive, helpful and charming. Excellent value for the money. Would absolutely stay here again.
Spacious, warm and cosy living space to relax in with a very private outdoor onsen. Easy transport to and from our apartment/cabin. Excellent onsite bakery/café in a serene location. Easy transport links to Lake Ashi and other locations (highly recommend buying the travel pass at Shinjuku station, Hakone Yumoto or a tourist centre). Friendly and helpful staff - assisted us with bus timetables and finding the correct bus stop.
Hakone
I wanted to love this hotel, recommended to us by a colleague who has stayed here four times. Gorgeous exterior of the building, immaculately clean, excellent bathrooms including onsen bath, loved the location, had excellent food at three nearby restaurants (Korean) and each of the two just on the path from the train station. Traditional interior furnishing and styling as we expected. Definitely an experience.
Hakone
Undeniably Beautiful Modern Ryokan in Hakone, The Picturesque of Front Lobby Terrace facing the Lake Ashinoko. It was very close to Togendai-ko Station, easy to access by Pirate Cruise, Ropeway. As same as many Ryokans, they have public Onsen but I booked mine Open-Air Bath, so I didn’t get to go inside the public bath.
Hakone
The onsen is amazing!! We travelled all the way from Tokyo to Hakone and living in onsen hotel is so relaxing after half day on road. The hotel is friendly to foreigners as well, they can explain everything in English. The facility is clean and neat, the big open space onsen is very nice to visit especially in winter.
Pretty awesome onsen experience. Very good price for hotels with private onsen and no need to worry about your privacy. The room is large and comfortable. The traditional breakfast is also a must-try. All the staff are really nice and helpful. The location is also great with restaurants and museums nearby.
Hakone
The hotel was really nice. Hotel grounds was beautiful, great facilities, beautiful onsen, food was really wholesome and delicious, and staff were very polite, warm and friendly. The room itself (west wing Japanese style) was beautiful as well and really nicely designed.
Hakone
Our room was fantastic. Staff was so friendly and attentive to every single detail. Facilities are absolutely wonderful. Loved the amenities, the private onsen, our room was absolutely wonderful. We had breakfast and dinner at the hotel and it was an amazing experience.
Hakone
Nice location and a 15 minute walk to the Hakone-Yumoto station. in the mornings they offer a hotel shuttle to the station until 10:30am. Room is spacious. in the onsen there is a massage chair for free use which I liked to use after a long day.
Well located on the Hakone ‘travel circuit’ close to the Togendai Ropeway and Lake Asahi pirate ship. Japan style room and indoor / outdoor onsen. Inclusive dinner and breakfast (to reflect lack of alternative eating options).
Hakone
The front desk was very friendly and helpful. It was a perfect location to tour Hakone, right next to the train and cable car station in Gora. This hotel is very clean, and the onsen was very relaxing.
Hakone
The staff was very helpful. They told us about discounted tickets to Onsens nearby which came in handy during our visit to Hakone! They also helped us out with bus routes and nearby convenience stores!
Hakone
Solid location right by the Yumoto Hakone station which will take you to anywhere you need. Private onsen is available for around 2000yen for 45 minutes. Staff is nice, especially the onsen lady.
