There aren’t a lot of restaurants around. We had one meal at a restaurant in Owakudani, and the rest were bought at a convenient store. We got the Hakone freepass which let you go on the ropeway, bus and a cruise as many times as you want for two days and was really convenient and worthwhile. The ropeway was a cool experience but the only place with anything to do was Owakudani. The cruise was nice too. We didn’t realise how long travelling to Hakone from Tokyo would take - we left Ueno station at 9:30am and got to Gora at 2pm. Everything closes at 4pm there so we basically wasted a day. It’s mainly nature - we wanted to see Mount Fuji but the weather wasn’t great. Next time we would probably stay an extra day and get the Hakone Fujj pass which lets you go up to the lakes for better views, or stay at the lakes.
Lake Ashi sightseeing cruise is a really good idea as you can get different views of Mt Fuji rather than having to walk around the lake (although walking around the lake is nice too). Book onsen resorts early to avoid missing out. Factor in plenty of time for travelling between places especially when going to the Fuji Five Lakes region. Hakone free pass generally very economical and convenient. Spend at least 2 nights in Hakone. Views of Mt Fuji dependent on weather.
Love Hakone, wish I stayed for another day or two to explore the surrounding area. Only had chance to visit Lake Ashi and the floating Tori gate and the Little Prince Museum. The price for accommodation in Hakone is a bit expensive for property with Onsen. Try finding the one close to station or else it will be pretty hard to travel with buses with baggage.
I would suggest going in the evening and waking up to a full day there. It takes a while to get there thru all of the trains. Plus that is what most people are doing. We thought it would be better to wake up there, do the “tourist loop” earlier before the crowds and then have the afternoon to do a hike or shop and browse. If you get there at noon that is not possible. The day we were there the clouds rolled in and there was no view of Fuji. Only saw from the train on the way. It would be spectacular if you get a clear day. I also think the center tram would be a better Fuji view then the Ropeway. It’s way higher, the Ropeway is sort of in the trees. It’s a very pretty area.
It’s a place very near to Tokyo and Yokohama, with great variety of natural landscapes; mountains, forests, rivers, volcano, lake. Hot springs are quite relaxing. A place with many food options. Public transportation is also superb.
Beautiful seems too light a word to describe Hakone. If you like to be surrounded by mountains, and enjoy a dip in some hot springs, this is the place for you. If you can make sure to book a hotel with a meal plan especially in the evening as many shops and restaurants tend to close early! (5PM!)

It is the best hotel experience I ever have! The owners are amazingly nice. I never really thought such nice persons could exist! They helped us with everything: carrying our luggages, suggesting every places to go in Hakone (with maps and all the information I need) and taking . They even drove us to the onsen near by and bought us Miso Soup and some snacks! The room is very spacious, clean, and comfortable. It’s a combination between modern hotel room and ryokan too! I really really recommend this place for everyone

The staffs are very nice. The location is close to gora station, hotel staff will pick you up if you just give them a call in advance (don't try walk there by yourselves, though it's just 5 minutes road on the map, the path is quite steep). Though the receptionist can't speak English very well, they use a translate machine instead to help communication, so no issues at all. Dinner and breakfast is exquisite (trust me, i have tried a few japanese style hotels and their meal). Onsen quality is as expected.

Amazing accommodation, tucked away in a quiet location surrounded by green trees! Free coffee and tea in the common areas was great and onsens open until 1am. We loved the small hotel feel of this place. We personally had an amazing stay because we hired a car and had the ability to drive everywhere. Because Hakone is a regional type of area, catching public transport would reduce the quality of your stay here because whilst it’s off the highway, it’s abit out of the way. Positively, thats what makes it beautiful!

I like almost everything! I loved our room. We booked the one with an open air bath but we didnt really use it. We were able to enjoy the balcony, though. I like that eveyone gets a yukata and wear it around the hotel and when having meal. I also loved that we get to use a private onsen for 2 nights for free! I recommend to book with a halfboard! The food were very good and interesting! The hotel is also very near Naka-gora cable car station. If money is not an issue, we would have stayed here longer! :D

Just a few steps from the Hakone- Yumoto station makes it a perfect jump off point to other scenic places in Hakone. All staff are very pleasant and nice. The traditional japanese room with outdoor onsen was beautiful. The sound of the river nearby while dipping in the onsen makes the experience very relaxing. I love their attention to details such as traditional sweets and thermos filled with cold water. The way they explain the dinner.

Location was great, with a superb view of Lake Ashinoko (and Mount Fuji when it's clear). Can even get the beautiful view of the lake from the room and the open air onsen. It's a very walkable distance from the boat cruise stop Moto Hakone and very near from the Hakone Shrine. The staff were super attentive, kind, helpful and knowledgeable. It is not easy to get around, but the staff made it easy to understand.

1. Very convenient to Gora station! Which has a very busy ropeway, so can wake up early and beat the queues! 2. The rooms were nice and I liked the Japanese dividers between the beds! 3. Staff showed me how to get to this lovely Onsen with a killer view of Lake Ashi! So that was nice and friendly. 4. The living room was actually quite comfortable.

The hotel is great value for money. It’s an adorable little ryokan and you can definitely experience Japanese culture here. I loved that you could visit other ‘ichinoyu’ hotels in Hakone and visit their onsens for free on day of check in and out. We went to the new Susukinohara hotel and enjoyed the open air onsen there too.

The staff at the reception were so nice they waited for us, way pass the check in time. They were so helpful as well, the lady at the reception printed us directions to Lake Ashi. The location and hotel is so peaceful and private, you can have an epiphany there! And the onsen was private and the view from it was relaxing.
9.3 Wonderful 189 reviews
Everything else is wonderful. Staffs are warm and food is great, and you have access to the comfortable onsen both in your room and in the public onsen baths. The location is superb, you can access hakone shrine and other attractions located on the south of Lake Ashi by walking.

Best location at Hakone, directly at the ropeway base station and the pirate ship station. Public bus stop directly in front of hotel and fantastic onsen! Nicely decorated rooms, just check the bathroom/shower availability when you book to avoid any disappointment.

I’ve stayed in many ryokans in Hakone and have to say that the rooms are rather huge for that budget friendly price. Surprised that our room comes with a lovely view full of greens. Splendid! Staffs are all smileys. Good indoor Onsen, clean and perfect temperature.
