Beautiful country side, very relaxing and people are cordial and kind. Rode the Ropeway on Cable train and riding the Gondolas 🚠 up to see the Owakudani Valley, Black Eggs of Hakone. Surfer beds you must see. We could see the top of Mt.Fuji in a clear day.

We arranged to stay 2 nights in Hakone at Hakone Retreat Villas. I was a bit worried that we wouldn't need that much time in Hakone, but boy was I wrong. It would have been great to extra night and day for relaxation at the retreat and leisurely exploration of the area. For example, it would be great to devote an entire day at the Open Air Museum!

There is a reason why this area is swamped with tourist - it is stunningly beautiful and very well organized to keep the masses moving. Plenty to see and do with options to get away from the crowds such as hiking.

Without doubt, the beautiful scenery of Hakone and surrounding region. We did the loop using the Hakone FreePass, well worth it. If you have time, spend an extra night and if you like a bargain, go to the Gotemba Premium Outlets. The direct bus from the train station is included in the FreePass and takes about an hour direct. It weaves through the various towns throughout the mountains and if lucky, you will see Mt Fuji (if going to the outlets, sit on the right hand side of the bus!)

Hakone is the base for exploring Lake Ashi, national parks, temples and art galleries. I could have easily spent a week or two there. It is a popular destination for Japanese tourists so don't expect everyone to speak English, but we got by fine with sign language and a few key words. We didn't get to try the hot spring baths but I would definitely do that next time around.

Lots to see and do. So many iconic things. Gets very, very crowded. Public transport very limited, especially buses for the volume of people visiting. Getting the Hakone Freedom Pass is a must. You save time and money.

Everything! Hotel is in a beautiful setting, basically on the shore of Lake Ashi. It's a 5-minute walk from the hotel to the sightseeing cruise (which is a great way to explore Lake Ashi), and the Hakone Ropeway which we also recommend doing. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Private onsen (that you pay for - $30 for 40 minutes) was a lovely experience, although there is a public onsen which is free to use. Buffet breakfast and dinner were included in the price and were amazing, catering for all palates.
Incredible accommodation considering the price. Quiet and relaxing. Nice location easily accessible by bus (free bus if you have hakone free pass) and decently good access to owakudani both via the shore of lake ashi or coming back via the hakone cable car, hakone tozan train line then a short bus ride back to accommodation. Onsen is incredible particularly the outside one and the kitchen common area was a lot better than most.
A traditional Japanese guest house with superb hospitality from our hostess and traditional Kaiseki Ryori cuisine. We booked a room with a private onsen which was lovely. We stayed 2 nights and the menu for both evenings and breakfasts was different allowing us to try a vast array of Japanese cuisine. The guest house was also near to the main Hakone Yumoto station
Well located beside Lake Ashi with a free shuttle service to Motohakone, a 15 minute ride. The rooms were quite spacious and the staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast isn't cheap but quite adequate to start the day. The onsen was very much appreciated. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay there.
Excellent location near Lake Ashi & Hakone-machi-ko port with beautiful Mt Fuji views. An authentic Japanese inn with very friendly host. The hot pot dinner was delicious!
