Located in Madarao Resort Village, Hotel Madarao is a 6-minute walk from Madarao Kogen Ski Resort. Free WiFi is provided in public areas on site. We travelled during the biggest snow storm of the year and got stuck on the road for 16 hrs. But Vicki, El and Mayu helped to turn that ordeal into a fun stay at Hotel Madarao. This hotel is a gem in this town. The staff are super friendly and very considerate. We missed our first night of stay but they were all considerate and helpful! We will definitely go back and stay just here every time!
Located in the Madarao Mountain Resort district of Iiyama, Hotel Madam Mirei is a 3-minute walk from Madarao Ski Resort. This 2-star hotel offers ski storage space and free WiFi. Amazing host, very welcoming and helpful. Did my laundry and pre-ordered VERY discounted lift tickets. Great price for private room, plenty of space. Public bath space was very good.
Located in Iiyama, a 6-minute walk from Madarao Ski Resort, Ono Pension provides accommodations with a restaurant and free private parking. The property has free WiFi. very hard to fine. Doesn’t even have a sign. Very dark and scary road at night. They can hang a one-dollar LED light at the entrance
Located in Iiyama, 4.1 miles from Madarao Ski Resort, オイソ provides accommodations with free WiFi and free private parking. The property has a shared kitchen and an ATM for guests. Location is very convenient, close to two JR train stations. All rooms were very clean. The staff kindly turned on the air conditioner before I arrived, which helped me to quickly get relaxed after a long journey!
Less than a 5-minute walk from the Madarao Ski Resort chairlifts, Hakken by Active Life Madarao is a small, cozy and relaxed lodge with private bathrooms for guests. The location was in very east walking distance to the ski field and also restaurants. The rooms were so comfortable and clean. There was good breakfast daily. It was amazing being able to utilise the facilities at other ‘Active Life’ accommodation for no charge. Most importantly Dan was a dead-set legend. He was able to provide good recommendations on pretty much everything, made reservations for us and was great to hang with in the onsite bar each evening for happy hour.
Renovated in 2016, the beautiful, chalet-like Active Life Madarao offers ski-to-door access from Madarao Kogen Ski Resort, a 3-minute walk away. The hotel was very homely, the staff were fantastic. Beds were amazing.

The fact that I’m leaving a review at all means that we really loved the place. I’m not the social media type so rarely leave reviews and when I do I’m always conservative so 8/10 is excellent. (Hope it doesn’t bring down your average 😕). Loved the chalet, good size, sparkling clean, super friendly staff and very comfy bed and facilities. Would highly recommend you to everyone. Sigh, missing it as I type this to be honest. Regards Tony
The igloos in Kamakura Snow Village was very interesting. We even built a snowman! Maguse Onsen was a good experience with its outdoor onsen overlooking the Kijimadaira ski area. Wish we had known about the temple trail in Iiyama town earlier to plan for it. Maybe next trip.
Iiyama is the gateway to ski field heaven - in winter. The train station is only 5 years old and is very modern, clean and well laid out - transferring to buses is smooth and moving around is helped by elevators and escalators. The Information Centre was staffed by a young lady who spoke English beautifully and is very helpful. You can send your ski gear from there via Kuroneko to avoid lugging it onto the Shinkansen. There is a walking tour you could do in summer to take in the local sights - some of them being a doll museum, paper making, onsen, cycling ... depending on the season.
We needed a place to stay for a night close to Nozawa Onsen on an extremely tight schedule, as we wanted to experience skiing there followed by the Fire festival. Arriving after an early morning transfer, our hosts (despite a strong language barrier) not only offered to drive us to Nozawa Onsen ski resort shortly after arrival, but also back at 11pm following the festival and then to the station at 7am the next morning for our bullet train. Couldn't be more greatful for the hospitality. Would have been a completely different experience without them.
I came to Iiyama to walk the Shin-Etsu trail, and I had decided to walk it without a guide, which proved to be quite the challenge, and everyone at the visitor center were incredibly kind and helpful in order for me to finish walking the trail, and I am so grateful for that. I would definitely recommend walking the trail, but with a guide!
We visited Iiyama for skiing at Nozawaonsen & Madarao, 2 ski areas that did not disappoint. Nozawaonsen for the cultural village aspect (& great skiing) and Madarao for the powder tree skiing. Iiyama is the gateway to many ski resorts and we didn’t spend long in the city itself - hopefully next time.
Altitude is a cozy hotel, and this was our second visit. Definitely not the last either. The rooms are Japanese size but give the required comfort. As we were returning guest and only guest (late in the season) we were upgraded so could not be better. Even though for the first night we were the only guests the service was surely not less. Breakfast was freshly cooked and very nice. The living room area provides a very cozy environment around the fireplace with very comfortable sofas.
This is the third time to stay in Kanoe. Family run hotel, though located in a quiet area, but can ski in and out (in good snow conditions, not this year unfortunately). Owner is very friendly and helpful. Very delicious dinner and good breakfast. Tidy and simple room with very good view. Free pick up service in train ststion. Tongari ski resort is good but as not many tourists knew about it, you just feel free while skiing.
The omelette of the breakfast was very nice. It was equivalent to or higher than ones served at premium hotels. Also, the bed was very comfortable and we could stay here in a relaxed mood in tidy rooms evrerywhere as it was evaluated by previous users. Above all, the owner was very dedicated guy and he helped us move around there, i.e. a free chauffeur service between the ski area and local restaurants.
The hosts were great, and the house was very cozy. They have delicious homemade dinners with all kinds of drinks and good breakfast as well. The hotel is pet-friendly so we met a few cute dogs. There was a heavy snowfall on our last day but Mark helped all his guests get to the slopes. Thank you!
They offered free pick-up from Iiyama station and back, which was a huge plus especially with my snowboard and ski equipments. And the bath (onsen) runs for 24 hours! Great and friendly staff too!!! The croissant during breakfast was delicious!!!!!!!
Very cozy hotel, the view from the room and back yard is amazing. Super friendly owners and staff. Nice breakfast with fresh homemade bread. Also you can have a dinner but need to inform the hotel in advance.
The owners were really nice and helped with everything we asked for. They took us every morning to the ski lift and took us back to the hotel after. Good dinner.
Easy to get to the hotel with the hotel shuttle service from the train station. Rooms are much bigger than most of hotels in Japan, the bar was the best!
carefulness and availability of hotel managers. Hotel close to courses. skills of the hotel manager to chose/set the snowboards
Location was great Staff were accomodating to drop us off at a nearby hotel so we wouldnt be stuck in the rain on our way out.
