It is very easy to ski down to the chair lifts straight from the hotel in the morning (at the end of the day you can’t ski all the way back from the top of #1 chair due to some small roads, but it is a fairly short walk). The staff were able to sell us lift passes. The owners and staff are relaxed and hospitable Australians who will do their best to make you comfortable. The breakfast and coffee was excellent. The restaurant food and views are very good. The door frames are high enough and the beds are long enough for tall people. The room had comfortable beds and a new (small Japanese size) ensuite bathroom.

We travelled during the biggest snow storm of the year and got stuck on the road for 16 hrs. But Vicki, El and Mayu helped to turn that ordeal into a fun stay at Hotel Madarao. This hotel is a gem in this town. The staff are super friendly and very considerate. We missed our first night of stay but they were all considerate and helpful! We will definitely go back and stay just here every time!

Madarao is a small village about 25 minutes away by bus from Iiyama. It is very accessible from Tokyo by Shinkansen. Dinner has to be booked in advance since there are not too many choices. People are very friendly, as Japanese are usually are, and try to accommodate as much as possible.

The fact that I’m leaving a review at all means that we really loved the place. I’m not the social media type so rarely leave reviews and when I do I’m always conservative so 8/10 is excellent. (Hope it doesn’t bring down your average 😕). Loved the chalet, good size, sparkling clean, super friendly staff and very comfy bed and facilities. Would highly recommend you to everyone. Sigh, missing it as I type this to be honest. Regards Tony

The igloos in Kamakura Snow Village was very interesting. We even built a snowman! Maguse Onsen was a good experience with its outdoor onsen overlooking the Kijimadaira ski area. Wish we had known about the temple trail in Iiyama town earlier to plan for it. Maybe next trip.Kok NgaiMalaysia - 8.0
Iiyama is the gateway to ski field heaven - in winter.
Iiyama is the gateway to ski field heaven - in winter. The train station is only 5 years old and is very modern, clean and well laid out - transferring to buses is smooth and moving around is helped by elevators and escalators. The Information Centre was staffed by a young lady who spoke English beautifully and is very helpful. You can send your ski gear from there via Kuroneko to avoid lugging it onto the Shinkansen. There is a walking tour you could do in summer to take in the local sights - some of them being a doll museum, paper making, onsen, cycling ... depending on the season.

We needed a place to stay for a night close to Nozawa Onsen on an extremely tight schedule, as we wanted to experience skiing there followed by the Fire festival. Arriving after an early morning transfer, our hosts (despite a strong language barrier) not only offered to drive us to Nozawa Onsen ski resort shortly after arrival, but also back at 11pm following the festival and then to the station at 7am the next morning for our bullet train. Couldn't be more greatful for the hospitality. Would have been a completely different experience without them.JamesAustralia - 10

I came to Iiyama to walk the Shin-Etsu trail, and I had decided to walk it without a guide, which proved to be quite the challenge, and everyone at the visitor center were incredibly kind and helpful in order for me to finish walking the trail, and I am so grateful for that. I would definitely recommend walking the trail, but with a guide!

The room was good sized and location was quite convenient being next to the bus stop, local eateries and a 5 minute walk up to the ski lifts. The staff were wonderful. I left my wallet in the safe and they promptly mailed it to my hotel in Tokyo. They have both Western and Japanese staff that are bilingual.
