The city offered a contrast to the big cities . Nicely preserved neighbourhoods and gardens. But the locals are showing strains of having too many tourists.
The ratio in Tokyo is around 1 tourists to 50 locals, Kanazawa is closer 1 to 15 I estimate. Certainly Locals in Kanawaza were less welcoming. 2 restaurants added unexpected costs after the food was served, caviat emptor.

For foreign visitors, please enjoy the real Kanazawa culture. The foods are going to be more superficial in these days. Please not to try just Maccha (which can be found anywhere) but try original food in Kanazawa.
I am sad Kanazawa is becoming just like Kyoto and Asakusa.

We were in Kanazawa two nights and spent a whole day looking around the castle and Kenkoeun gardens. So tranquil and beautiful. We did a tea ceremony in the gardens which was also a highlight. There are lots of little souvenir shops close by.
The Loop bus is a cheap (800yen) way to get around. Kanazawa, getting on/off as you want.

Kanazawa was a breath of fresh air to escape the city life...
Kanazawa was a breath of fresh air to escape the city life in Tokyo. We stayed for 2 nights, there was enough time to check out all the attractions we had on our list.
Visit Omicho market in the morning or early afternoon, the shops close in the late afternoon. We visited a local restaurant which was located right at the edge of the market, the food was delicious, and it was full of locals. I had fun shopping around the Higashi Chaya district for local crafts and products, be sure to stop at any of the tea houses for parfaits and soft serves to beat the summer heat!
The Kenrouku Gardens had an amazing variety of trees, do not miss this landscape masterpiece.
Nomura Samurai house had a beautiful Koi pond garden, it was a nice place to stay for about 30 mins to 1 hour. Having visited Nijo Castle in Kyoto later, the scale of the samurai house was a little small but provided real life context of the hierarchical differences.
We also enjoyed the 21st Century Contemporary Museum with the pool installation, be sure to make a reservation for the pool in the morning of your visit! They will not allow you to visit if you did not make a separate booking.
Food: Do check out Turban Curry for mouthwatering local Kanazawa Curry and Noburu Ramen for a popular sardine broth ramen (if you visit, highly recommend buying peaches in the huge supermarket beside... full of juicy sweetness! This was in late July.)
Tip: Look out for an attraction pass at the Kanazawa Station, they bundle several attractions (21st Museum, Kenrouku etc.) for 1,000 yen, definitely worth the price. I believe this pass is not available on sites like Klook, so it was a nice discovery for us. You have to purchase the pass online yourself (the QR codes and posters are plastered everywhere in their tourist information counter in the train station); they do not sell the passes at the Kanazawa station.
Just lovely. Everything about UAN was perfect. Beautifully designed, modern hotel with with well equipped, simple rooms and welcoming and helpful staff. Western and Japanese breakfast options. We tried both and they were delicious. Location is excellent, with easy access to everywhere we wanted to go. Highly recommend to anyone visiting Kanazawa.
Good size room for Japan, great amenities and comfy pyjamas provided! Free drinks and snacks provided in the lobby at different times during the day which was a bonus. Walking distance to Kanazawa Castle and gardens. Kimono rental just 3 mins walk away, inside the New Grand Hotel, next to the Tourist Information Centre.
One of my favourite hotels of the trip, the Mitsui Garden Hotel was situated in close proximity to Omicho market and only a quick bus ride to Kanazawa Station and Kenrokuen Garden. Great Japanese bathing facilities and a lovely room. Would definitely stay again next time I travel to Kanazawa.
The hotel had a traditional Japanese style room with tatami mats and futons to sleep on. The staff were very friendly and helpful. They provided a lot of great information about things to do in Kanazawa and the location was central to everything we wanted to do.
Fantastic hotel in Kanazawa. Very helpful staff, who were also bilingual. The facilities were excellent, breakfast was very good and included Japanese and continental spread. We would certainly go back to Hotel Amanek in Kanazawa!
