Beautiful Japanese garden and castle grounds, excellent shopping and great yet reasonably priced food, clean city, friendly people. Easy to get around on the Tram, bus or taxi. Loved the Richmond Hotel due to cleanliness, breakfast, cost, staff and LOCATION right in the Arcade (their outdoor complex of a covered mall). You can find anything to eat or shop for in the Arcade. Lots of convenience stores like Seven 11 with kiosks to exchange currency for essentially $1 or $2. Many smaller restaurants and smaller shops politely request cash only so have some yen on hand. For those who want McDonalds or Starbucks, they’re both a 1 minute walk away. There’s even a KFC and a few Italian places further down the Arcade. Bus Terminal across the street about 4-5 min walk from our hotel. Please try Hunk and Betty’s for amazing beef and chicken dishes 3-4 min walk away. The Chef/owner is very friendly and speaks a little English. It was crowded inside for lunch so we asked to sit outside where he had 2 small tables. Without even being asked, he opened the overhead awning for us because it was sunny outside. For the best Sushi in Kumamoto, go to Yokobachi but make reservations. Beyond the sushi, I had never been so excited about grilled beef kebab and soup in my life. You must try Family Hot Water Dogwood for a very refreshing hot springs bath experience about a 30 min bus ride (9 miles) south of the city. You will have to walk a mile from the stop so others may consider a cab ride instead. The owner is lovely, speaks a little English and takes credit cards. I would try to get the family room tub for a private accommodation! Beer available for $5 pitchers. Finally you need to go to their Japanese Garden for a serene and relaxing experience! Of course we’re here during Cherry Blossom Season so it’s even more beautiful. If you’re here then, they have lovely Spring Festival performances in many public places including the Arcade. Love Kumamoto!
Very well located just opposite to the Kumamoto train station. Good breakfast especially the bread. Nice environment with clean room. Toilet is a little small but not too bad overall. The onsen is clean and comfortable
Kumamoto is a nice city with an authentic Japanese feel. While there are many foreigners, it is mostly Japanese. Having an extraordinary castle (currently being restored after a 2016 earthquake) in the center of the city is wonderful. Travel is easy with cabs, buses, trams, and trains (including shinkansen) within easy reach. For those who are more adventurous, car rentals are readily available, and easily accessible via mass transit. Restaurants are plentiful, food is awesome, and service is excellent. ATMs are ubiquitous, and there are 7-11s everywhere, serving great food and featuring inexpensive, decent wines. Starbucks and McDonalds have a good presence also, for those who need a taste of home. It's surprisingly easy to get around, and even with a serious language gap, you can generally communicate well enough to get by.
Sadly, the castle is under construction after the earthquake, but we saw it in a distance anyway. Last samurai battle was held there and it's an important historical landmark regardless of denied approach. We ate at the hostel and it was tasty and fresh. We weren't cruising around the city, but on our way to mt. aso we had much opportunity to see the city from the bus.
There are plenty of food options and you can definitely eat your fill here. Especially the options for yakiniku are great here. And there were many great bakeries with fresh bread. Even if the castle is still under reconstruction, checking the castle out is definitely worth it.
very relaxed town, easy to stroll around We were lucky that the castle was accessible due to the rugby being in town, but anyone contemplating a visit during a trip there in the future should check in advance.
The hotel is perfect! I've booked a superior room for three adults, the room size is so much bigger than average hotel room in Japan. Each of us get a large bed. Plenty of space for the luggage. Bathroom is separate from the WC. Bathroom is terribly comfortable to bath in. Amenities are provided, they even provide sanitization, deodorant spray for clothes. The location of hotel is just right in front Karashimacho station '辛岛町'. Walkable distance to kumamoto castle and Josaien.
Kumamoto
The hostel owners are very kind and welcoming. If you are there on a Saturday night there will be a homemade all you can eat dinner for 2,000 JPY. The night I arrive the dinner was a Korean style hot pot and it was delicious! I was in Kumamoto in January, but I was never cold because the family room and bedroom were kept warm and cozy. If I am in Kumamoto again, I would love to come stay at this hostel again.
I'd say the best thing about staying there is that you get a free beer (or other drink) every night as well as several other free treats during the day (coffee/tea, popsicles, yakult drink, and noodles). The onsen is nice, too (especially the outdoor bath), the location is hard to beat, and the hotel is clean and modern. I would definitely stay there again.
It was close to the bus terminal, there’s a tram station down the road, and staff was kind. The hotel is away from the shopping and bar district, so it’s nice and quiet, although you can easily get there by foot. It’s a straight seven minute walk to Kumamoto Castle, too, with a city park between the castle and the hotel.
The hostel is super clean with nice design. The owner speaks very good English and super friendly. Location is great too, very close to the Kumamoto castle. Nothing to complaint here. I spent very good time here.
Kumamoto
Like a small apartment that we can cook meals, wash and dry our clothes freely. The price is reasonable. Good position, near the Kumamoto Castle, Kumamoto Station and be able to take the Tram to other places.
The room had a nice view to Kumamoto castle, and it had all the basic amenities. Staff was friendly and they kindly let us park in front of the hotel when our car couldn't fit in the garage.
The room was comfortable and the staff were friendly. The location was great- close to the castle but also to many shops, restaurants and tram and bus stops. The price was reasonable.
The location of the hotel is very good. It is at a walking distance from Kumamoto castle, there are many restaurants and karaoke places nearby as well as a shopping mall.
Location nearby ginza street and Kumamoto castle. Convenient stores was nearby too, didn't explore much locally as was raining during my visit.
1. Location, Perfect place morning run around Kumamoto Castle. Superb view of sunset. 2. Room 3. Staff, pleasant service 4. Good price
A pleasantly delightful stay. The rooms were large and very comfortable. Great location as well straight across from the castle.
I like the location. It is very near Kumamoto Castle and the shopping street. The Lobby Was very nice and new.
This hotel is so near the arcade where you can enjoy your shopping and an affordable place to eat
Good breakfast choices. Excellent location near the main shopping area and Kumamoto Castle.
Very close to the Kumamoto station. Provided additional beds for my family in the room.
The room was very clean. And the hotel location.
The room size was a little smaller than I expected, and the furniture was not conducive to sitting and eating, but the room was comfortable wit a great view, and the bathroom was very well designed with a large shower.
The staff were very friendly. And the hotel was clean and tidy.
