Wow what a spot - felt lucky to be staying in such an historic town / building. It must be incredible to stay here in the mountains during warm weather! Kitchen was very accommodating with my allergies to seafood. Much appreciated

We loved our stay! We stay at a traditional Japanese room, it was an authentic experience. The host are a lovely couple who even prepared breakfast for us to take on the road. Everything was clean, comfortable, and welcoming.

The guy that handles it is super nice, communicated well and made sure that I don’t have any questions, thoroughly explaining the features and the activities the area had to offer. On top of that, he offered me a ride to the nearest convenience store. Further more, the place itself was super clean, smelled nice I must say although that’s my opinion, and had everything needed for a stay

We enjoyed our stay so much. Beautiful location in the mountains with green view from the room. The room itself was large and comfortable. The design is from another area (not modern) but we found it part of the charm, made us feel relaxed and comfy. Dinner and breakfast were wonderful. I contacted them a few days in advanced to inquire regarding vegetarian options, and they made alternative vegetarian versions for each of the meat courses just for me - I really appreciated the care! And they were just as delicious. The staff were kind and attentive and the owner very sweet. Perfect getaway, and great value for money.

Staying with Joe at the Samurai Hotel in Narai was one of the highlights of my trip. Conveniently located adjacent to the main old-town Narai strip, staying in this hotel is a unique experience. This is a no-frills establishment but the staff are excellent and it is a pleasure to be hosted by Joe. There is something of a community spirit about the Samurai Hotel. Definitely a stay that works well with walking the Nakasendo, stylistically as well as logistically. If offered, definitely take the opportunity to observe Joe's Iaido practice, it is a unique, interesting, and educational experience.
