Nagano is quaint, relatively quiet, well-paced, not crowded and easy to get around. It is less expensive and touristy, compared to other larger Japanese cities. Nice balance between old and new, city and suburban living.
Nice getaway from Tokyo without long journey. Wonderful temple and city of manageable size. Onsen 10 minute taxi ride from station. Friendly to Westeners, and decent dining choices at station if you're hesitant about exploring
Nice for skiing, hiking and shopping definitely. Only about 30 minutes by JR from Nagano station to Karuizawa Prince Outlet. If u want to skiing, there are some places excellent for skiing , we also visit Jigokudani Snow monkey onsen.
The snow monkeys were awesome! We really enjoyed it. We also went skiing for the first time at Happo One. The snow was beautiful and we had so much fun! Nagano was like the central location for all the activities. Great location and easy to get around to the surrounding cities, ski resorts, and attractions. We used yelp to look for restaurants and ate ramen a lot just to try it. We were not disappointed.
I think a lot of people bypass Nagano on their way to other famous places nearby. It was really nice to just hang out in this little town for a few days. They have a nice Onsen. Also if you want a really good meal... there’s this little restaurant, Yamabuki, right next to the bridal shop on their “Main Street” (Chou Dori street[if you’re facing the Zenkoji temple, it’d be on your right- like a couple blocks south]). They have a phenomenal traditional Japanese meal and can do a vegetarian version of if you ask for it. Also around this town they serve Soba tea, which is an amazing tea that’s only really found in this part of Japan.

Easy walk to Nagano station and nearby convenience stores. Friendly, helpful staff and even a robot to interact with, which was fun. Free coffee and tea available in the lobby. Comfortable beds and spacious bathrooms (for Japan). Good placement for our family with two rooms next to each other at the end of the corridor, so safe to split teenagers and adults. Great view of train lines for train enthusiasts, but train noise didn’t continue late into the night.

Breakfast not included but for some ¥1250 buffet breakfast available. Good selection and great value for money. Staff all polite, courteous and friendly. Most speak English to some extent so no communications whatsoever. Good free WiFi in room and public area. All in all - excellent

Fantastic place to stay if you're a fan of fun and food. Wanna try fresh wild boar curry? The owner goes hunting for one while youre sleeping in. Good location to see the local temple and a good push off place for the snow monkeys with a train station only a short walk away. Did i mention this place is also a bar/restaurant with its own freaking rock climbing wall? Must stay for Nagano!

About 25 min on foot from train Nagano station and there we are very close the Zenkō-ji temple, a beautifull area to hang around. The neighborhood is very peacefull traditional Japanese style. So take some time in Nagano and stop at Dot. Onegaishimasu

The manager is very friendly and helpful. Nagano is such a great city, we stayed for 2 nights but could have stayed longer. The room is very big with a seating area and a large bathroom. There are good amount of amenities. This hotel has quirks too, as a refurbished love hotel you might find some funny additions but that's what makes Japan great!

The people working there were so nice. I was very tired that day and they allowed me to rest even after the check out time. One woman that worked there played me one of my favourite songs and even showed me how to play it myself! After that another worker was very kind to me. Even though she didn't know a lot of English she made her best effort to make a conversation with me and we ended up talking for a long time. The overall look of the place gives a very warm "I'm at home feeling" and I would love to return there again. Other than that they have everything you need including a laundry machine. Also, perfect recommendations of how to spend time and what to do around the area! Need I say more?
