Lovely city - we went to Glover gardens (house closed due to renovations) and Peace Park for a day which worked well. Champon the dish we found to be average compared to other food eaten in Kyushu. Spent a second day at Unzen - hiked up (max 3 hours up and down) and walked round springs topping off with a natural sulphur Onsen (recommended by very helpful tourist office staff). This day was AMAZING - don't miss it! Then caught ferry - very easy across to Kumanoto and drove to Aso - all worked perfectly.
Interesting site of major historical events in Japan, with unique memorials and architecture scattered throughout the city. If you’re interested in Japan’s early exposure to the West (trade, religion, architecture, learning, etc), early industrialization, World War 2 involvement or Japan’s overall economic development then this is a place to visit. Easily accessible through the city’s excellent and cheap public transportation system, Nagasaki’s key tourist spots and shopping areas are reachable within minutes.
I am not a seasoned traveler, I don't know how to compare Nagasaki to other Japanese cities. I've been lucky to live nearby for several years now, so whenever I can get to the big city, it's Nagasaki I visit. I love it. It's a beautiful city, cosmopolitan and friendly. It's incredibly easy to get around, even for non-Japanese speakers, and there's tons of things to see. Even after many visits, there's still all kinds of sights I haven't checked off my list, and I look forward to exploring more of the city.
Climb mount inasa and watch the sun set - the views of the city and sea are stunning though it's very windy. The peace park is beautiful and the Nagasaki bomb museum is fascinating and harrowing (not suitable for kids). There are some lovely temples towards Kazakashira park too.
Peace Park was very interesting and quite different to Hiroshima. Great little bars and restaurants close to the Hotel and the City is easy to walk around while hopping on and off trams. Dejima is very historic although it's hard to imagine it was once reclaimed land on the seafront. Great views overlook the city from the Glover Garden. Urakami Cathedral is worth a look and is the iconic Nagasaki equivalent of the Atomic Dome in Hiroshima. Would have needed more time for Gunkanjima Island but it was closed as the landing stage had been damaged in the Typhoon.
Nagasaki is a place that more people should visit. The Peace Park, museum, and the Nagasaki site should be put in places to visit as well as the Gunkanjima Island and the Oura Church and Huis Ten Bosch. These are really hidden gems in Nagasaki.
The room was clean and spacious .. the bed was really comfortable and there were plenty of power outlets 👍
