Onomichi is a small coastal town in Japan that is great for a day trip. The town is very walkable, and there are a wide variety of restaurants and shops you can explore. Taking the ropeway up and walking down the mountainside has great views. If you are in the Hiroshima prefecture, it is worth stopping by.

The temple walk is a must if you are visiting Onomichi.

The temple walk is a must if you are visiting Onomichi. It starts at Jiko-ji temple and goes through 25 old temples in the area, including the ones of the seven buddhas tour. Got all the goshuin from these, which was a nice souvenir for myself. You can also take the ropeway to the top of Saikokuji mountain during the tour, which spares you of too many steps during the walk. There were still quite a lot. Afterwards you could walk along the Hondori Shopping street to get some refreshments and local souvenirs. What I would have enjoyed is visiting the other side of the river (?) but I didn't have time for that. I'm sure there is also stuff to do, and apparently the ferries run quite well so it is not too much of a hassle. A restaurant I absolutely loved was きっちゃ初（朝ごはん屋), which serves breakfast on some days and dinner on others. I only had the dinner, but it was hands down the best Japanese food I had during my whole time of staying in Japan. The owner is lovely and the food was tasteful and light, Japanese home cooking at its finest. It was a little bit difficult to find as it is located in a hidden alley, but it is definitely worth it.

The town itself is nice but not too special. Plenty of good places to eat and many shops, but the main attraction is the startof the Shimanami Kaido bike route of course, it is gorgeous and highly recommended!

Onomichi is a picturesque and walkable city with lots of charm. You can stroll the vintage shotegai, visit the art museum, enjoy a snack at Onomichi U2, take a temple walk, ride the ropeway, and of course, biking the Shimanami Kaido. The people are friendly and the food and shopping are great.

Because I got in late from doing the big bike ride over from...

Because I got in late from doing the big bike ride over from Imabari, I was left with little time or energy to explore Onomichi. However, I did do some of the temple tour in the morning and it was excellent. I recommend taking the "ropeway" (I'd call it a cable car) to the hilltop and work your way down. I'd love to come back and explore more of this interesting little town.

If your visiting Onomichi for bike riding , it has everything you need . It’s also has great walks , shopping ,places to eat and the walk along the waterfront and boardwalk is wonderful. Enjoy a meal or a drink . Catch the ferry to the islands and explore on foot or bike.

urashima INN - GANGI is a lovely hotel in the gorgeous town of Onomichi. I stayed at the hotel in order to rent a bike and cycle the Shimanami Kaido. It is ideally based for the town which is 5 minute or so walk away for the ferries to Mukaishima Island and for the bike rental vendors too. The room sizes are a little small and probably a bit of a tight squeeze for two people but, as I was staying on my own it was more than adequate for me. The staff were also very helpful and welcoming. I will certainly return again next year.

Often in Japan, rooms are quite small, but this one was very large, clean, modern, very comfortable bed, interior well designed and practical (nice bench at the window with sight on the beautiful lobby), very nice bathroom. The two owners were very nice, both speak very good english, they serve great breakfast and the coffee was also great. One of our best hotels during our stay in Japan. :) (and Onomichi is a hidden gem as well, we were so happy to have spent there a night and checking put the city before traveling further)

Carolina and her brother Percy were some of the warmest hosts we have had in Japan! The rooms were so nice and cozy (especially nice since it was freezing outside)! The breakfast was delicious and they have a great little diy kitchenette for coffee, tea, pop-corn and other treats!! They are fluent in Spanish also which was really nice! Wish we were staying longer in Onomichi!
