Located in Teshikaga, 9 miles from Lake Mashu, Forestlodge Subaru has accommodations with a restaurant, free private parking, a garden and ski-to-door access. The host couple is very kind and caring to us. The dinner and breakfast are amazing! I strongly recommend people who stay in this guesthouse to order the dinner and breakfast. We were also very happy to meet the dog which is very energetic :) overall, we had good memories in this guesthouse.
Surrounded by mountains, lakes and the great wilderness of Hokkaido, Mashuko Youth Hostel offers simple accommodations with free WiFi access. Lake Mashu is a 16-minute drive from the hostel. Great service from the owner! He drove me to the hostel and back to the train station.
Decorated with art works designed by artists, ARtINn 極寒藝術伝染装置 is located 1.9 mi from Lake Kussharo. The property is located 6.2 mi from Lake Mashu and 1312 feet from Kawayu Hot Spring. Loved the outdoor private onsen, location, funky inn with instruments and owner. Awesome place!!
A 3-minute walk from Kawayu JR Train Station, Hotel Parkway features a hot spring baths, karaoke. Free Wi-Fi is available at the lobby, and laundry facilities is on-site. Contrary to previous reviews there was a private toilet in our room, and there was an indoor bathing facility available for both men and women. Dinner was delicious!
Located in Teshikaga, within 6 miles of Lake Kussharo and 9 miles of Lake Mashu, Yunokaku Ikedaya provides accommodations with a garden and free WiFi as well as free private parking for guests who... The room was large, and fine. But dinner and breakfast were exceptional, authentic, and totally eclipsed any concern we had about the hotel. The location is outstanding, and the communal onsen was old-fashioned, but very enjoyable.
Traveler's Inn Asanebo offers simple but homely Japanese-style accommodations a 7-minute walk from Kawayu Onsen Train Station. The Host was very helpful and friendly! He drove us to the onsen and showed us everything :) he seems to love photography like us and he even timed breakfast a little later so that we could take pictures of the swans early morning at the hot springs!
Featuring an on-site hot spring bath, Kawayu Kanko Hotel is located in Teshikaga, just 7 minutes’ drive from Lake Kussharo and 25 minutes’ drive from Lake Mashu. Free WiFi access is provided. Wonderful natural hot bath, very confortable japanese style room, good buffet breakfast and dinner
Must visit in Hokkaido. Just find out from the local reception about the webcam apps available to monitor the condition on Lake Mashu and Lake Kussharo. So you can drive up when it is not foggy. If you dont have time, you can give Lake Akan amiss.
The lakes and mountains are unbelievable beautiful!! Hiking is very nice over there! Everyone should see this once in their life ;) Until October there are some public buses, but it is still a little difficult so I had to hitchhike from time to time A car is nice but buses of course better for ecology ☺️
Beautiful area with lots of great walks. Unfortunately the weather was bad when we were there so we didn't get to see the famous lake as it was covered in thick mist. Io Zan with its sulphuric fumeroles was great. The Ainu museum is worth a visit.
The Mt Meakandake hike is a must-do but it's not easy to know about it or get information without specifically asking. 4-5 hours round trip on three routes with spectacular views into a steaming crater, across the rim and over the national park. Information across the park as a whole is quite poor, making planning accommodation difficult. We based ourselves at Yano Hanfurari which was great for Mashu and Kushiro lakes but 1hr 20 drive to Akan. If you've time, see Mashu more than once as the fog and visibility are highly variable. No charge for parking at Observation Point 3 and views are similar. For food, excellent soba restaurant in Akan Onsen.
There are many highlights for this area. Lake Mashu is spectacular and the walk to Mt Mash is wonderful. Great museum (eco-museum centre) at Kawayu. Lake Kushiro is lovely and the walk around the Wakoto Peninsula was excellent. And there are other great looking walks - perhaps we did need more time here!
