The room was large, and fine. But dinner and breakfast were exceptional, authentic, and totally eclipsed any concern we had about the hotel. Must visit in Hokkaido. Just find out from the local reception about the webcam apps available to monitor the condition on Lake Mashu and Lake Kussharo. So you can drive up when it is not foggy. If you dont have time, you can give Lake Akan amiss.
The lakes and mountains are unbelievable beautiful!! Hiking is very nice over there! Everyone should see this once in their life ;) Until October there are some public buses, but it is still a little difficult so I had to hitchhike from time to time A car is nice but buses of course better for ecology ☺️
Beautiful area with lots of great walks. Unfortunately the weather was bad when we were there so we didn't get to see the famous lake as it was covered in thick mist. Io Zan with its sulphuric fumeroles was great. The Ainu museum is worth a visit.
The Mt Meakandake hike is a must-do but it's not easy to know about it or get information without specifically asking. 4-5 hours round trip on three routes with spectacular views into a steaming crater, across the rim and over the national park. Information across the park as a whole is quite poor, making planning accommodation difficult. We based ourselves at Yano Hanfurari which was great for Mashu and Kushiro lakes but 1hr 20 drive to Akan. If you've time, see Mashu more than once as the fog and visibility are highly variable. No charge for parking at Observation Point 3 and views are similar. For food, excellent soba restaurant in Akan Onsen.
There are many highlights for this area. Lake Mashu is spectacular and the walk to Mt Mash is wonderful. Great museum (eco-museum centre) at Kawayu. Lake Kushiro is lovely and the walk around the Wakoto Peninsula was excellent. And there are other great looking walks - perhaps we did need more time here!
