I visited Monrovia for business. It's not really a tourist destination for most people, I think. Or not yet, anyway. Unless you enjoy seeing a country crawl up the development curve, or unless you've spent a lifetime in Africa (like I have) and just enjoy the variety of different countries.
Extremely interesting city from its aspect of history, fame, struggles, epidemic, wars, diamond business, liaison with Libya, interests from the US, once strong but dwindling, lovely people, still hopeful and positive despite the almost hopelessness of silent despair, while the thriving businesses have fallen into the hands of Lebanese and Indians, but not much for the locals. The new airport will help the arrival and departure perception, as the current facility wins the prize for the worst airport in West Africa. Wishing the Liberians all the luck in the world, they deserve it!
The limited roads are highly congested. Many paved roads are badly worn. There was almost no electricity all week. It came on for the weekend though. The national museum is very good. I love the people and the rainstorms. The beaches can be dangerous if there is not a security guard nearby. Club Beer is good and inexpensive. The post war city is slowly rebuilding but most people are quite poor. Anyway, i like it here.
Overall, the city is nice, but need major developments to increase the economic growth for the local people and the country. However, the thing that i dont like the most is unofficial forced-Tipping almost everywhere.. when I have just landed in Robert International airport, the airport officer seems force me up to give small money, and obviously it was.. and then when you walking on the road side within the city, you will be attracting some local people (because of different face and skin color) and without shame they will ask you for small money.. even the worst thing i ever had was during departing out from Robert International airport and (again) the airport officers will ask you for small to medium money... what a shame.. Well, i can at least understand why they do that, the government need to do some breakthrough for the Liberian people to increase their livelihood..
There is so little information about Liberia. It is still early, but it’s a nation with a huge tourism potential. Watch this space! It’s a gorgeous country with miles of awesome beaches and friendly people.
Monrovia is wonderful, unique city. It is small but vibrant and the beaches are beautiful. People are welcoming here and the food is among the best in West Africa. It’s best to eat at the small and medium-sized local Liberian-owned restaurants to experience authentic cuisine. Visit the newly remodeled National Museum - the new exhibits really show the country’s epic history. Getting around is easy - either hailing a cab or keke if you don’t mind crowding together - or chartering a private car (per ride). Some people hire drivers for a daily rate.
