Must visit to the recommended pagodas like Shewedagon (night time touring is wow..) Sule pagoda, the 72m long recling buddha etc Scotts market and their local morning markets if staying around 15th street. Take the yangon circular train for about 2.5 hours to have a feel of the locals life, can try stopping at some stations get down and mingle into their daily activities. If you dare, take their local trishaws as well, fun! Quite easy to get around with cabs but make sure to negotiate for a good fare price and confirm before boarding. Try their local streets food if you have a strong stomach. Shan noodles is my reco and their local fruits and find a stall sit down on mini tables and stool to enjoy a cup of their local milk teas together with dough liked pastry. The street foods are very affordable Take their local ferry opposite strand hotel area. A different life exposure Visit 19th street aka Chinatown area for BBQ food and beer chill out. Next visit maybe have to be other months of the year as this round was extremely hot though last day in Yangon it actually rained! Have FUN and be SAFE as the pavements are not so well structured. Especially night times when street lights are minimal.. Thank you.
Yangon was our last place to visit in Myanmar so it was a bit disappointing after seeing other places, the people are not as friendly as elsewhwere, it's dirtier, busier and more chaotic than other places. However it is a real Asian city (though is quickly becomming modernised and globalised, there's even a KFC now!)so has a very different character to Bangkok, KL, or Hanoi for example and is not really geared up for tourism. Tip: make sure you have sarong or trousers for Shwedagon pagoda men and women if not you have to buy one for 5,000K. We took a train to Bago for the day, the experience of being on a train was worth it but Bago is nothing special. The colonial architecture is fascinating, wander the streets in Chinatown and near Sule pagoda, highlight of Yangon. Food is hit or miss, try 19th street which is full of locals and tourists for the BBQ street food. I ate some good Indian food (best outside of India) and we treated ourselves at Monsoon restaurant.
Traffic in Yangon is a nightmare so you will spend most of your time sat in a stationery taxi; though they are at least cheap. It is quicker to walk but distances are far and the pavements are littered with vendors. That said, wandering through the local areas is a highlight of any Asian trip for me. The Burmese afternoon tea at the Strand is exceptional and makes a change from sandwiches and scones! Visit Shwedagon pagoda at sunset for stunning views across the city. If you are interested in taking the night train to Mandalay or Bagan you will need to book well in advance to get a sleeper.
Spend lots of time at shwedegon pagoda, it's one of the most beautiful, peaceful and thought provoking places I've ever been to. Spend less time in downtown Yangon, it's one of the most ugly, industrial and deafening city centres I've ever been to. Go and get bladdered on 19th st though!!
Favourite restaurant: House of memories. It's an old colonial building used to be Aung Sang General's office. It's walking distance to Shwadegon Pagoda. Shwadegon Pagoda. Nice rooftop bars: Vista Bar for close look of Shwadegon Pagoda; Yangon Yangon at Sakura Tower (highest tower in Yangon, so far), which has decent cocktails. Myanmar Beer: can be easily found on tap at 19th street. Drinking Myanmar milk tea and chill at local teahouses. Fresh avocados, bananas, pomelos and various fresh fruits available for cheap price on the street!
Invest in private tours, get some personalise excursions and request for the omission of stop offs that are of no interest. We cut out the meals that were often included, because our hotels food was great and we were not wanting tummy troubles. We had a great guide with good english, and decent vehicles. Visit museums and pagodas, cover shoulders and knees at all times, smile and you'll meet delightful people. Be generous with tips- westerners are well off and I regret not leaving all of my remaining dollars with the team who worked for us - the amount was small for me but handy for them.
Surprising for Yangon, everything was absolutely perfect there! We appreciated so much location, rooms, cleaning, food & staff! We stayed in the hotel for my Birthday and I get all the possible attention from the team & so many pleasant surprises were found in my room! The location is perfect to take the early morning bus to Ngwe Saung Beach. The rooms are clean and we heard no street noise. The food in the restaurant was good.
